I walked into my local NJ AT&T store on Friday. I acted like I didn't know the iPhone release date and asked to buy one. (I made a bit of a scene).

The clerk told me June 29. I asked if it was going to be good and he said, "it's going to be the best phone out there. By far."

I asked data plan and he said "yep, standard $39.99 data plan required." I asked again and he said "they won't let you get the phone with out the data plan. no way."

This was just a standard AT&T clerk so take it for what it's worth...

I have no interest in the iphone but I live near a cingular rep who says the same thing. However, another rep who is slightly higher than your entry level rep kid said no. I bought a Blackberry Pearl without one although they said it was required. I am not sure they can force you without proving data needs to be transferred in order for the phone to work.
My guess is that unless it came from an Apple Employee anything you read on this board is crap until 6/29.

they know as much as we do. Unless you somehow get leaked info from apple/at&t HQ then these people are useless. Even the employee guidelines that have been leaked say plans will be announced later.

What if

What if someone wanted to buy one just because its a kick ass IPOD and never use it as a phone?

My favorite thread titles always start with, "Take it for what it's worth" or "My cousin who works for Apple" or even "Johnny Ive is my sister's ex-boyfriend who totally gave him an IPHONE early."

Note: I would never capitalize iPhone as IPHONE, it was strictly used for demonstrative purposes.

My local AT&T store also keeps telling me that the 40 dollar unlimited plan is required, and will contain 1500 txts

SHes told me numorous times that it is a 39.99 unlimited data plan, ontop of any voice plan

When we bought our second blackjack, the sales person at an AT&T store told me we needed a $39.99 data plan. It was only after he saw my line and saw that we had a $29.99 plan on the other blackjack, AND after we got someone from their call center on the line, that he finally agreed we only needed the $30 plan. Actually, only $20 if it weren't for ActiveSync.

The moral of this story, the rep at the AT&T store was dead wrong 6 months after the launch of the Blackjack. What are the chances those guys know what's going on before the launch?

I just heard from a local store that the data plan is required but they don't have any details on the price.

Possible AT&T Pricing Posted Today?

I just went to the AT&T site to check to see if pricing had been published yet and the site is "down for maitenance." Could they be updating the pricing structure for the iPhone? I'll keep checking.

Actually knowing how most AT&T stores operate, they will not sell high demand devices where data is a feature to consumers without the data plan. They'll just refuse to sell it to one customer, because the next customer will want the data plan and they get commission on data plan sales.

It's not a rule, but just something many store reps are guilty of doing all the time. Rules are supposed to go out the window with this phone, but I guess we'll see how it really goes down on Friday.

I predict a lot of happy apple store customers, and a lot of upset AT&T store customers.

The AT&T site is back up. No data/rate plan information, but the iPhone ad is now gone. Interesting.

I may be wrong... but I think the amout of people buying an iPhone just dropped. $40 is a lot on top of a $39.95 voice plan. I am truly hoping this is wrong or they were just egging you on. (egging for lack of a better word) :p

$80 at a MINIMUM for monthly service....

keep in mind that the data plan for blackberries includes GPS and other features that the iphone doesnt have, so It could be alot cheaper due to the only data transferred is internet & email, not any tracking software or resource hogging apps.
