Taking AppleTV on Vacation

Thinking about taking one of our AppleTV2s on vacation with us so we'll have access to our music (iCloud) and media (iTunes purchases & Netflix).

Can anyone who's done this give feedback and any tips for quick setup? Will I just need to adjust the network connection or will I need to go all the way back through initial setup?

It's been so long since I had to set up my two AppleTV2s that I can't remember what all is involved in setting them up for the first time on a wi-fi network.

Also, my AppleTV2s work pretty well at my home and I don't want to jeopardize that ... I would hate to bring it home and run into trouble trying to get it running again on my home network.

I think your biggest problem will be whether the hotel TV has HDMI and a controller that lets you access an external input.

I have done it twice. It is a while since I did it but I didn't set it up from scratch. I just connected to the Hotel Wifi. I remember it up and running quickly and watching Twit TV right away. Wasn't too much trouble when back home.

There was some delay in getting in to reconnect at home, several hours but it eventually figured out the Hotel Wifi wasn't available. I have them wired with ethernet now. Even if you had to set it up as new which you shouldn't it shouldn't take more than 15 to 20 minutes depending on the number of accounts you have passwords for.

If the worst came to the worst just set it up again. You can't really upset it. So I wouldn't worry about that. It is so small and easy to put in luggage that you might as well.

A lot of hotels I have been in have REALLY bad TV's. Even good hotels. But there is probably no point in asking them as they likely won't understand so I would take it with me in the hope it would be connectable. A surprising amount of hotels have a 2 foot ethernet cable sticking out over the desk and no wifi so you might want to take that into account. The desk might be a long way from the TV and the Apple HDMI cable is short.

We'll be staying in a condominium at a ski resort so I won't be locked out from accessing the output ports the way you are in hotels. There is a brand new 60" LCD and the unit has wi-fi. I plan on taking an HDMI cable with me.

One reason I am hanging on to my original ATV 160GB, the lack of anything but HDMI on the ATV2 is bad since a lot of tv's and people have not upgraded to HDMI devices. I am all for the upgrade to the bigger and better, but why cut our hands off since Apple assumes the world will adapt to them, people are not going to waste money just to upgrade bc Apple thinks they should.

I love Apple but sometimes I think they make silly moves and do not care how they affect people, and let's face it, a lot of ppl move when Apple does, but I am not going to throw away good money on something that works, just not in my cards. Do not have to have the latest and greatest all the time.

I take mine to my brother-in-laws house when we go so we can use netflix, and I am also able to get my eyetv shows as well as mkv's streaming from AirVideo server via airplay.

I've Moved Mine

To my next door neighbours, at first I thought I was going nuts, because it picked up all MY stuff, no matter what I did to it, it was locked to my network.


Three guesses as to the issue (I doubt you will need them) My router is screwed to the wall EXACTLY next to his TV and to where I'd put the ATV MAN was I After turning off my router it was a breeze.

I can't see you having too many problems in setup.

It was no problem when I came back either, just had to re-enter my password.
