So I upgraded my IPhone 5s to 9.2.1, and was thrilled to find that bringing up the camera and either of the default overlays (or double tapping the home button) no longer allows the volume buttons to take pictures, a functionality that Apple, in their infinite wisdom, removed for no reason. Any way to get this back?

Can confirm on 9.3 you can't take photos after double tapping home button but I personally didn't know you could in older versions.
Agree with C DM, people jumping to conclusions without properly trying to understand OP.

What conclusions? Thread title is about using the volume buttons as the shutter for the camera. Mentions "no longer allows the volume buttons to take pictures"
When the volume buttons do work to take pictures.
Unless the OP doesn't mean the volume buttons at all, there are no other conclusions than its still possible to use the volume buttons and something is causing them to not work for the OP.

Well, I didn't quite mean it in the way you are referencing, but you bring up a point about "default overlays" and what that might be in reference to and what differences might be there in relation to them.
I think he means the filters when he's referring to overlays.
I did just try and use the volume buttons on the 5S and it worked fine. I don't remember the double tapping of the home button either - That shows you all the apps you have in multitask.
You might need to reboot.

Hi everyone, thanks for your feedback, I realize I was being unclear in my question. I'm referring to opening the camera app THEN pulling that black summary thing from the top (that says "today" and " notifications") or bottom (that lets you turn on or off a bunch of features like wifi, Bluetooth, or the flashlight) of the screen. I don't know what those are called, but previously when they were "covering" the camera app using the volume buttons still let you take pictures. Similarly, pressing the home button twice and bringing up all the apps that were running also let you take pictures. IOW, doing these things after starting from the camera app maintained the functionality of the camera app. Now, the volume buttons control the volume, although yes, when the camera app is running by itself, the volume buttons do take pictures. This is the functionality I was referring to above. I may be the only person on the planet who found this useful, and I'm guessing there's no option to get it back? Thanks.
What you are talking about are Notification Center and Control Center. As for "previously", what version(s) of iOS are we talking about here?

That's a shame they took that out. Don't think I ever used this feature but I do recall the camera app still being active during the app switcher, and now it's not, not sure when that changed.
I'm pretty sure there is no option for this so you're out of luck I'm afraid.

I guess they may have made the change to prevent people from trying to secretly take shots or something. Kinda like the camera shutter sound being always on in certain countries like Japan and Korea.
I'm almost thinking it's more or less to have more appropriate user experience--if you have Notification Center or Control Center on the screen or you have the Recent Apps on the screen then technically you aren't within a particular app at that moment and so the controls should apply as they typically would when you would have Notification Center or Control Center or Recent Apps up from the home screen, for example.
It's a shame it freezes and frosts the image though - other apps still continue to run and animate when you bring up NC or CC and when you enter app switcher.
What's strange is you can still continue to record when entering these modes even though you don't get the preview of what's being recorded
Yeah, I think that definitely could be the more likely answer.
I feel like it's one of those fringe cases that most people wouldn't encounter or use so they either didn't feel like it was a priority to change (yet?) or they haven't thought about or considered it yet.
