Talkme into buying an iMac

Recently the familyl has had the bug for a new computer. Between us we have two decent laptop PCs. I do a little bit of gaming (World of Warcraft), but that addiction has greatly faded. The majority of I comp usage is the standard iTunes, web surfing, email, blah. Lately I've been doing most of my surfing on my new touch 2g.

My only true need to upgrade is to have more space for media, my current iTunes comp is 60gb.

Of course I agree the 24 inch display is beautiful, but I need more justification to spend the money. I'm looking at the 2.4gh 24 inch, ty I'm assuming is decent enough to last a few years of softcore gaming and meet my other web needs.

This would be our first apple computer.

I couldn't be happier with my iMac; I only have the 20" entry model but it's definitely the best computer I've ever owned (I do wish I had gone with the 24" now, it just looks so beautiful). I love how it takes up very little space and therefore there's less clutter, and how easy it is to set up and use. Very fast (even with the 1GB of RAM I have), great performance and Mac OS X makes an already aesthetically-pleasing package all the more attractive.

Before I got it I had no experience with any Apple computers (I'd only owned a couple of iPods) apart from maybe a few times over a one-year period testing out a MacBook in-store, but within a few hours I decided I'd never go back to a PC or any Windows system; Mac OS X is so easy to learn how to use and is very functional. I'm glad I took the plunge and became a Mac convert, one of the best purchases I've ever made.

getting mac pro was the smartest thing i have done so far.

get a refurbished 24" model 2.4 or 2.8 and you should be fine for next couple of years. it will handle everything u need to do

you can game almost any games out so far, well mac games that is..

-saves space (its a monitor and computer in 1!!)
-1 power cord
-you can literally take it anywhere without getting fustrated with the wires all over
-its a beutiful machine
-wireless/bluetooth capabilities
-very user friendly

My wife got her iMac right after the switch to aluminum. We got the 20" as well; the 24" is wall-mountable, which appealed to us as a bedroom TV option, but we realized it would end up getting less use as a computer and not really much use as a TV...

She has been extremely happy with it. I've had my MBP since the Intel chips were first put in. She'd used it a few times and was constantly saying things like, "that's all I have to do?" and "well, that was easy." Not to mention, "you really don't need anti-virus software installed?" and "you're telling me the computer has stayed on non-stop for how many weeks with no crashes?" After one BSOD too many, we took my next bonus and made good use of my education discount (she loves the iPod now...).

I recently converted my brother and his wife as well. He's in IT (MSCE cert'ed and all that) and put together a Hackintosh to play with after having to deal with Vista first-hand and hearing all the hype about OS X. Took him 2 months to make up his mind, but they've got a new 24" iMac now as well, along with a Touch (edu discount) and a case so it can go on vacation with them.

If you're looking at the 24" just for the hard drive space, realize that you can build to order and upgrade for not much. Optionally, you can add an external drive to your router for shared storage. We've had no issues with the 250GB that came standard, but we have a dedicated media server. I'd also suggest signing up for Mobile Me at the same time. There are a few issues since the switch from .mac (the loss of calendar sharing being the most infuriating), but still a nice service to have.

I've just ordered my 24" iMac due to forking out on a laptop a couple of years ago and it being no use for college now... It hasn't arrived yet but ive been using a macbook pro and its so much easier to use than windows... practically zero crashes ect its faster than the laptop I have now, and we bought it about 4 years ago.

I defenatly recommend getting a refurbished one though.. the only difference is it comes in a different box. Oh And go for the 24" entry one, it should be plenty fast enough for what you stated!

If you MUST buy an iMac (Which I did, and now regret it)... go to apple.com and buy a refurbished one. They are less expensive than a new one.

However... whatever you decide you HAVE TO GET APPLE CARE. It shouldn't even be an option, because iMacs fail... I bought mine in Dec. 07 and had it completely replaced due to a screen problem.. and have taken this unit into the Apple store 3 seperate times for repair.

I regret getting my iMac because the price is MUCH higher than the quality of the product. Fortunately, I was smart in leasing it, because I knew of the problems they had and when my lease is up, I can just send it back and get the newest model in hopes that problems will be fixed.

If I could change things... I would have gone with the highest end Macbook Pro. It would have been easier to carry back and forth to the Apple store when something failed.

My wife and I made the switch last November. I don't have any regrets, other than not doing it sooner. The wifee still has some pains at times, since some of the (clipart/photo) apps she was used to aren't available. Well until I set bootcamp for her.

They are great computers, not a single problem with either one. The two 24" iMACs sitting in our office are gorgeous. And when we turn the sons PC off, it is.... SILENT in there...

BTW, they play World Of Warcraft flawlessly. We both play it regularly.
