Tap-to-Click Not Working on the Emoji Keyboard on Monterey 12.5

I have been experiencing issues with adding emojis from the emoji keyboard that pops up in macOS Monterey when you press the Globe key a couple of times. I finally figured out what is going on. When the emoji keyboard pops up, if you tap-to-click on an emoji character, the keyboard will close but the character won't be added to your text. If you press-to-click on the trackpad, the emoji will highlight in pink and then the keyboard will close and the emoji will be added as expected.

Can anyone else confirm this behavior? I'm wondering if it is a "feature" (a bug) or just something weird that my system is doing.
