Hello all,

I have a shortcut called "Open Door" that allows me to unlock my August lock. I use Siri on my AirPods to invoke the shortcut. It worked fine on iOS 14. However, now that I'm on iOS 15, I get a screen that wants me to "Tap to run..." This totally ruins the original function I was using it to unlock my door without pulling out my iPhone. Is this a bug or a feature? Is there a workaround? The weird thing is if I use Siri on my Apple Watch or iPhone, the shortcut runs right away. Thanks!

Turn off that toggle. When 'tap to run' toggle is turned on, it requires you to manually tap then ok button before the shortcut will run.
Where is the toggle? I've looked in the shortcut and I don't see it. I've even re-created the shortcut, and there is no option or toggle.

Here is an example.

Not all Shortcuts get that toggle as an option. Since this is a secure device (door lock) and AirPods aren’t, it will always ask for your confirmation on a secure device (iPhone or watch) before running. Very crusty indeed but it’s a security thing. It’s been like this with HomeKit devices since the beginning as well.

There is a workaround for this using a smart plug.

I get that. But since it was working with iOS 14, I don't know what's changed.

What's the smart plug workaround?

I’m actually really surprised you had this running in iOS 14. I use HomeKit for all my automations like that so it might have been something Apple overlooked in Shortcuts until now. Same with HomePods. Would be nice to unlock my doors with it but it always sends me to my iPhone to confirm.

Anyway, the workaround is to put a smart plug (HomeKit supported) somewhere in a back corner that nobody uses. Set up an automation so that when the smart plug turns on, it will unlock the door. Since the smart plug is not a secure device, it won’t ask for confirmation. The verbal command might need to be altered a bit though. Since it’s a smart plug, it will only understand on and off. So you may need to name the smart plug front door lock switch and say “turn the front door lock on” or “turn on the front door lock” to unlock.

Not done yet… Now when you lock the door, you’re gonna need an automation to reset the smart plug e.g. turn it off. So create another automation that when the front door locks, the smart plug turns off. Since locking a smart lock is not a secure action, you shouldn’t need a workaround for that. It should just work without confirmation. Two more things to complete this fiasco. Since you want the smart plug and smart lock to work in unison so there’s no confusion between the devices, set up two more automations, one so that when the door lock unlocks, turn on the smart plug (in case you manually unlock the door) and another so that when the smart plug is off, lock the door. Might not be a bad idea to put the smart plug in the corner of a room you frequent so you can also have a remote visual cue (smart plug’s LED indicator) on whether the lock is locked or unlocked.

Hope you were able to stay with me through that but it’s your only option, really.

I hate posting this on here. I’m always nervous an Apple engineer is gonna peruse this site and take workarounds away from us too lol.

Thanks for writing all that. I copied the text to my Notes, so you can delete it in case those pesky Apple engineers see it.

Was it not supposed to work that way at all? I guess I thought it was the same as talking to the iPhone or Apple Watch.

No worries. Home automation is my hobby…

Definitely not supposed to work that way as far as I know. I been using HomeKit since it came out and I was never able to unlock/open a secure accessory without a doing so on secure device. Even asking Siri on my AirPods to navigate home or to work (two secure locations) requires confirmation on my iPhone by unlocking it.

Admittedly, I haven’t dabbled much in Shortcuts yet so it could’ve been different for that in iOS 14. I’m not calling you a liar Lol. Ironically though, I got annoyed with Shortcuts early on because of certain “automations” not being fully automated (see your original post above lol).

Hope my explanation to the workaround wasn’t too confusing. It’s really a lot easier than it seems in words.

I have a shortcut linked to an NFC chip on the door to open my door lock with a tap. Worked like a charmed but same as you since iOS 15 it asked for confirmation. I understand why but it’s so annoying…

I think the only solution is the plug trick thing unfortunately…

Yeah, this stinks. NFC automations have been made useless.
