I am trying to use my mini as an external disc via target disc mode, but neither my rmbp nor a mba recognizes it.

I tried and put the rmbp into target disc mode and this works and i was able to connect it to the mini that way.

But y isnt the mini recognized?

Agreed - how are you connecting the mini to your other Mac?
You need to use either Firewire - or Thunderbolt between the two Macs.

I used the same mini display port cable with both.

It works when i put the rmbp in target disc mode and the mini recognizes it.
But y doesnt it work vice versa?

I assume the problem lies with the mini since our mba doesnt reconized the mini either.

Sorry, we still need more info.

Technically, you don't do Target Disk Mode with a "mini display port cable," you must have a Thunderbolt cable...but if it worked one way (rMBP --> mini) then it should logically work the other way.

As for your MBA...that isn't in your signature, so nobody here trying to help you can offer any useful advice.

So, once again, try writing exactly what you are using, and exactly what you are trying to do, and exactly what you did that a) did work, and b) didn't work.

I wrote exactly what worked and didnt work.

Again: putting rmbp in tdm is recognized by the macmini.
Putting macmini in tdm is not repcognized by rmbp or mba.

I have no idea what else i am supposed to write

The mba is 2013 haswell "13 i5 4gig/256gb base model.

Of course you can use target disc mode with a minidisplayport cable.
Tb is downwards compatible with minidisplayport.
U just use the thunderbolt ports on the two macs u wanna connect.
