Hi there,

currently I do have the 2012 Retina 15" Macbook Pro. Next week my new 2016 Touchbar Model is coming.
I was wondering how I can migrate my data (1 TB). I'm sure that Target Disk Mode would be the quickest option for me (if I can get it to work), as my Time Machine backup in on the network and it's quite slow.

Since the 2012 Macbook has got Thunderbolt 2 and the new Macbook has got the USB-C Style Thunderbolt 3 I was wondering if Target Disk Mode will still work between these two machines and which cable I would need?

There is an Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) Adapter from Apple. I already own a Thunderbolt 2 cable. Would this constellation work for target disk mode? I cannot find any information on this on Apple's website.

Has anybody tried it?

Thanks!

I did exactly that when I got my 2016 MBP Pro last week. It works perfectly.
