Target Disk Mode on a SSD in USB 3.0/3.1 enclosure

Hi all

I am planning to make a clone of my internal Yosemite boot drive using Carbon Copy Cloner.

My question is: If I clone this to an SSD in an external USB 3.0 enclosure, would I be able to use Target Disk Mode to selectively boot over USB 3.0? There have been postings but mostly focus on how to but over Thunderbolt or FireWire.

Also has anyone tried this on a USB 3.1 (Gen 2) card and see if the Target Disk Mode works?

Hmmm, I'm either confused or you are. Target disk mode is running an internal drive from one Mac via another Mac. I.E. I can run my Mac's SSD via my other Mac's hardware. What you want to do is boot from an external USB. There's is no issue doing that but it isn't "Target Disk Mode". Any external USB drive will work.

As the previous poster said, you do not need TDM to do what you want, the external USB drive will be available both in System Preference-Startup Disk panel and while booting with the Alt/Option key pressed.
