Hi people!

I was just google'ing for a way to turn the new 24" iMac (and future Apple Silicon ones) to an external display for a MacBook or PC. While doing so I came across this article: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204592

If i remember correctly, this post had red text at the top that said something like "This article isnt updated anymore" or that it was archived. To make sure i went to the way back machine an verified that this was the case: Check it HERE or in the picture below

That text is gone and apparently was 'Published Date: May 22, 2021'

Not sure if anyone noticed this or not, but Im gonna use this to start my own rumor:
Target Display mode or something similar to this will come back!
(Or has it already with AirPLay screen mirroring to Macs?)

What do you think?

Universal Control is clearly their intended solution. The best you can do right now is using Luna Display.

well, in fact you were right, with monterey, it actually came back, even though it's not official. If you press CMD+F2 you can now enter TGM again.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it comes back at some point in the future, though probably not until Apple releases a large iMac. After all, the Studio Display ships with iOS 15.4 so it effectively offers a Target Display Mode (TDM) for anything connected to it.

From an Apple perspective, bringing back Target Display Mode is a win since:
1. it’s a better value proposition for iMac customers (e.g., continue to use it as a monitor even when the computer inside no longer delights you)
2. it increases the environmental impact associated with e-waste
