I want the hardware experts to chime in on this one, like the title reads, if Apple can release a Mac Mini DUO with capability of a 2 gig of ram, can't they make a 12" MBP right now? Look at my SIG if you're interested.

Personally I think having a Mac Mini DUO will cause problems for apple in their product line, it brings its performance too close to the iMac, and it's supposed to be the bargain

Surely, they could produce a 12" - or likely 13" - MBP.

BTW, I don't see the mini as iMac competition - the graphics alone are inferior, and the latest Xbench stats (only somewhat useful, I know) show it to be about half as fast. Nice for the size/price, but not an iMac killer.

I see it as a good possibility that Apple will produce a MacBook Pro that's smaller than the 15" version. Whether it's going to be a 12", 13.3", or some other size is something I couldn't really take a guess at.

As far as the Mini being close competition for the iMac is concerned, I don't necessarily think that's the case. There's always the Core Solo version for those looking for the least expensive Mac, but I feel like the two products are different enough that they won't hurt Apple.

I would think they would have to be able to produce one, yes. And for that matter, the 17" MBP should be cake if they can do the 15". I'm really curious as to why these products are delayed...

i don't think the products are being delayed. but more so slowly laid out. look at the demand for the 15" MBP. they can only deal with so much there. i think they are doing the lineup in this way so that they aren't flooded too much at anyone time. i would expect a smaller form factor and probably 17" MBP at WWDC and PowerMacs later in the year. iBooks in a few months perhaps.
they don't want to rush too much out too soon.

I reckon they will probably release 13.3" sizes for both iBook or Macbook and MacBook Pros. I've got a sneaking suspicion that they might use Integrated Graphics in the iBook replacement so that more people will want to fork out the extra for the MacBook in the same size. Those of us wanting a new iBook will probably get angry at that and those that really care will probably be more likely to spend more on a MacBook rather than refuse to buy Apple. Apple marketing wins again.

How about just waiting until they're ready to release them? A petition for something that is inevitable doesn't seem like much of a petition to me...

Integrated graphics in the iBook would be a disaster. The iBooks are catered towards high school and college students. That demographic heavily uses the iLife apps and makes good use of the video capabilities that. These are the functions that define the Apple platform. Anything less than a X1300 in the iBook would be a severe issue and most of these students will not shell out for a Macbook Pro.

How much does iLife actually use 3D graphics acceleration? Apple's official system requirements don't even mention any graphics cards.

The mini has a different motherboard than a laptop. If I'm not mistaken apple's Mac mini was the first computer to come out with a micro-motherboard. Clearly the next MBP will have a Dual core processor and come in a small and large size (but who knows how many inches they'll be).
