First of all, I have an iPhone 3GS, 3.1 software.

I am about to go to bed, so I was gonna plug my phone into the charger, like I always do. Just before I plugged it in, I noticed it was at 37% charge. But then right as I plugged it in, it dropped to 34%. Is that normal? Is it because of the 3.1 software?

There is a thread on the effect of 3.1 software on iphone battery life that's been active for three days. You need to observe your battery performance for a longer time and under different circumstances than a single plug in to determine what is significant and what isn't.
