What was wrong with it before? I believe there are a few improvements and new features as is standard with each new iPadOS/iOS release. Don't know how it can get 'way' better though, it does it's job pretty well already. There are several other file managers available though. If files doesn't do what you expect, you could take a look at one of those.

iPadOS File App is a very robust file manager similar to Finder or Windows Explorer and has come a long way and is actually very usable.. It is one of the most used apps on my M1 iPP 11 for managing files and sending to or grabbing from my desktop computer and external drives. There are some 3rd party apps like Tonido and FileBrowser that I also like, but the native Files App is what I use most now.

Here are a few video tutorials I made for iPadOS 15.5 Files App

How do you send and retrieve files from the computer?

With Files app, I set it up through the app itself. I made those videos above. The second video talks some on that. It is set up in the shared function at the bottom of the menu on the left. There are two 3rd party apps I like and use. FileBrowser and Tonido. Both on the App store and very good for file management between devices. You should look at the videos. Thanks!

  • “Open with…” still missing
  • Set default apps to open with (mine is still opening the wrong app for some files)
  • No thumbnails for servers
  • Quick Look should be as good as macOS
  • No toggle to allow folders to be always on top
  • Batch rename
  • I would like to have a Live Activity or notification for copy or move progress instead of being only in app
  • Sync now button would be nice
  • I hope being able to remove downloads will stay and not be removed again like last year
  • I would love a thumbnail slider in Quick Look akin to viewing a photo in Photos app to quickly view other files

Can someone with the new iOS 16 beta speak to the improvements in the files app?
Not much, the main improvement is that you can now show extensions and there are sorting column although they still don't work as well as on a desktop OS. And you can see folder size (astonishing this wasn't there before). Other than that no apparent changes and I am not risking my SSD to try and see whether the exfat corruption issue has been solved/improved.
Still the main issue with the file app for me has not been solved: ability to choose the app that will open a given file type.
Third-party file browsers are not as integrated as the file app and generally rely on it to work.

One feature that has been added that is very welcome is the 'remove download' option of iCloud storage. This was added to finder in MacOS afew versions ago. It means if you have locally stored files on your iPad you can remove them from local storage while keeping them on the cloud. I believe previously you would have to wait for them to auto remove after a period of non use
