The reviews on this app are a prime example of what is wrong with the reviews system for the app store, nowhere in the application's description does it mention SSH support yet people are complaining and giving low ratings because a Telnet app doesn't support SSH! Come on people that is why it is called a Telnet client and not an SSH Client! If you want to know more about the app for example if you aren't sure whether Telnet means SSH or not then go to the developer's support site and ask them, don't post negative reviews!

I just had a quick play.

It does if you really need access and can use telnet.

It was worth me getting it but It's not as slick as I'd have liked.

- It only seems to do portrait mode so text is a bit weird.
- it has a text box and you enter commands in it and then it send it to the remote shell.
- It does keep your last text in the box so if you just type you can fix that.

This will tide me over till and ssh app arrives but for me it's definitely a temporary measure.

People have the right to review how they wish. It hasn't what they want, they can rate it lowly.

That isn't what's wrong with the review system. What's wrong with the review system is people who never bought an app giving it a low rating because it's too expensive.

Okay so say you're a developer and you develop a blackjack game and people give you negative reviews as the game only does blackjack and not poker then do you think that is fair?

Since you have the app do you mind answering a couple ?'s ? Does it give you a way to send special characters like Esc or |? All I really need is telnet since VPN is built in to the iPhone so I've been waiting for an app like this but $2.99 for something that looks this ugly? And Portrait only?? Ick, but I might shell out the $ if it does what I basically need...

Ok had a bit more of a play and it only uses the standard iPhone keyboard so yes you can get | but no ctrl, esc etc. (still looking tho) this is a major issue.

also my other half logged in and then i logged in after him and it still had his stuff on the screen (it's fine if you quit), sending a clear command didn't actually clear the screen.

looks very basic, hope for something more featureful soon.

You are 1 million percent wrong.

I can't give a bad review to a Othello/Reversi game because it is not a football game.

ok, I don't just look at the stars an app has I actually read the reviews when considering it... If someone gives an app 5 stars but their comments say "this looks like a great app" I ignore their opinion because it is clear they haven't actually used the app and had no business leaving feedback... Along the same lines if someone gives an app 1 star but leaves no comments or something along the lines of "it didn't do my laundry too, 1 star" then I ignore their opinion too... I never make a decision to buy an app without reading the comments, I don't even look at the stars...

thank you VERY MUCH for the reply, the reviews that were posted in iTunes earlier were pretty useless :)

I'm not sure if people are really familiar with telnet vs. SSH these days in a general sense, but I'm sure wikipedia can fill them in if they don't know.

Telnet can be useful (for some purpose other than multi-user dungeons or MUDs), but SSH is king these days. The application's usefulness is limited because the demand is there for an SSH application and not Telnet.

That will definitely (partially) explain this.

Actually, you can.

Lots of apps seem to have been reviewed by people who didn't even try them, had no clue what the app was supposed to do, or were too cheap to pay for anything over $0.99.

You know it figures I read this comment you made while searching through MacRumors for people needing support with our Blackjack game, and I laughed, HARD. Then not even 5 minutes later I see a new review of our game with the following:

"I just find it's a little limited with not many different games to try"

So here is a true to life example of that actually happening, nothing we can do about it sadly.

Yes Telnet and SSH are technically very different application. However to the average user they seem the same. There are a slew of "telnet clients" for PC that support SSH. Actually they are SSH clients that support Telnet as Telnet is a very basic protocol. It is like having a Web Browser that couldn't handle FTP (Those are also very different formats too).

Well MUDs have been loosing steam. Most people want SSH for Buisness reasons as they can connect to their computers remotely and do maintenance on it or get some info.

I typed "N" and this app did not take my character North. Then I typed "take all" and it did not pick up the length of rope nor the jewel encrusted sword. This app obviously did not meet my needs and I'll be forced to give it a bad rating.

I will too (even though I haven't downloaded it yet) because from reading your review, it doesn't sound like it would fit my needs either :p

You obviously missed the "It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue." followed by "You have been eaten by a grue."

Grues on our iPhones. It all makes so much sense now.

Disagree.

People have the right to review how they wish, but that still makes them dumbasses. ;)

The problem *is* reviews that don't stay on point, and the kind of reviews where they rip it for a feature it doesn't claim to have are a classic example. The other examples are all the reviews in the music store that talk about how iTunes "sucks" instead of saying anything about the song or the movie, and the app "reviews" that go on about how bad an app is or how expensive it is, when they haven't even bought it. How can you review an app if you haven't bought it?

Personally, I never review anything unless I have bought it and played it or used it for a week or so. I'm not sure why Apple even allows reviews of products that the reviewer hasn't even purchased other than the fact that it's probably difficult to implement that restriction.
