A Telnet app is now up in the app store. Anyone tried it yet?
The reviews on this app are a prime example of what is wrong with the reviews system for the app store, nowhere in the application's description does it mention SSH support yet people are complaining and giving low ratings because a Telnet app doesn't support SSH! Come on people that is why it is called a Telnet client and not an SSH Client! If you want to know more about the app for example if you aren't sure whether Telnet means SSH or not then go to the developer's support site and ask them, don't post negative reviews!
People have the right to review how they wish. It hasn't what they want, they can rate it lowly.
I just had a quick play.
It does if you really need access and can use telnet.
It was worth me getting it but It's not as slick as I'd have liked.
- It only seems to do portrait mode so text is a bit weird.
- it has a text box and you enter commands in it and then it send it to the remote shell.
- It does keep your last text in the box so if you just type you can fix that.
This will tide me over till and ssh app arrives but for me it's definitely a temporary measure.
Since you have the app do you mind answering a couple ?'s ? Does it give you a way to send special characters like Esc or |? All I really need is telnet since VPN is built in to the iPhone so I've been waiting for an app like this but $2.99 for something that looks this ugly? And Portrait only?? Ick, but I might shell out the $ if it does what I basically need...

You are 1 million percent wrong.
I can't give a bad review to a Othello/Reversi game because it is not a football game.
Ok had a bit more of a play and it only uses the standard iPhone keyboard so yes you can get | but no ctrl, esc etc. (still looking tho) this is a major issue.
also my other half logged in and then i logged in after him and it still had his stuff on the screen (it's fine if you quit), sending a clear command didn't actually clear the screen.
looks very basic, hope for something more featureful soon.

Okay so say you're a developer and you develop a blackjack game and people give you negative reviews as the game only does blackjack and not poker then do you think that is fair?

I'm not sure if people are really familiar with telnet vs. SSH these days in a general sense, but I'm sure wikipedia can fill them in if they don't know.
Telnet can be useful (for some purpose other than multi-user dungeons or MUDs), but SSH is king these days. The application's usefulness is limited because the demand is there for an SSH application and not Telnet.
That will definitely (partially) explain this.
I typed "N" and this app did not take my character North. Then I typed "take all" and it did not pick up the length of rope nor the jewel encrusted sword. This app obviously did not meet my needs and I'll be forced to give it a bad rating.
