What is everyone using to monitor the temps on their minis?
If you're not already doing so, use iStat Pro (free) or iStat Menus ($16) to get accurate readings of your temps, fan speeds, etc. A forum member has posted a copy of iStat Pro that has been "tweaked" to enhance compatibility with Mountain Lion. You can download it here.

iStat menus. Invaluable tool. Tells you almost too much though :)

SMC Fan Control is good. Free and easy to set your base fan speed a little higher if you need. I has a good Menu Bar icon that give you Temp and Fan Speed. If you get iStat you don't need this though.

The CPUs will turn off if they get hot enough to do harm. The fans will come on well before that.

If the Mini is turned on, then it's OK. That's what I use to monitor the temp.

Had a temp program for all of one day, got bored with it, and served no useful purpose for me. Uninstalled it, and that was about 2 yrs ago. I have AppleCare Plus if any issues. My opinion, none needed unless you see the darn CPU turning off on you, which tells you the system is protecting itself. ;)

I wish iStat still existed :( There is no other monitor widget like it. I'm wary of running a user written script from someone on a forum, so I'm out of luck.

If you read the thread where that was posted, you can see details of what was done. You can download iStat Pro yourself and make the same changes, if you prefer.

Good point! I didn't mean to imply I didn't trust the MR community, I just always prefer clean builds to random ones... my bigger fear is we will continually have to update this as OS X is updated. Someone else should really think about making a widget. I'd even pay for one of iStat caliber!

I was not aware of all this temperature monitoring until I came to this forum, where it seems to pop up every once in a while.

I live in the tropics, and my Mini just works.... as it it always has done. I fail to see the issue. Are people looking for a problem that doesn't exist?

Pretty much, yes.

The whole point of an operating system is to monitor and regulate thousands of different things many times a second. So you don't have to.

If you do have some problem, then looking at one of these utilities to monitor your fan speed, CPU temp, disk activity, network activity, Process and memory usage, etc, etc, etc, might be useful in diagnosing a problem.

But spending all day checking that your computer is working correctly is ... micro-management, to say the least.

Agreed. I only added a temp monitoring tool when I upgraded my 2006 Mac Pro from 4 cores to 8 and put in non-spec Memory in it as well simply so I could watch to make sure nothing was over heating. It still is technically running on my Mac Pro and I check it once in a blue moon, but I no longer have any worries that there might be a problem, so I tend to forget all about it.

In a Mac Mini, since the processor can't be upgraded and there are no requirements on cooling the memory modules, I just don't see the point unless I was experiencing a lot of random shut downs during CPU intensive tasks.

Me too and have no troubles, actually when I tried it on my "new" Mini a couple of weeks ago I got a lot of Read/writes on the disk and other disks, in the end I found out it was iStatMenu's new cache feature, well, nice feature, annoyed me like hell.
