I have a 3g now and will be upgrading to the 4g this summer. However from oct 1st - Jan 1st I will be in Europe. I will be taking my 3g and using skype since it will no longer be under contract and I won't have to worry about incuring overseas travels. Anyway, is there anything I can do to get my 4g contract cheaper for those 3 months so that I'm not throwing away $240 while it just sits at home? I'll get rid of my SMS plan but can I do the same for data and just reactivate it when I get back? Or can I just put my entire contract on hold for 3 months and just extend it that much further on the end?

Wouldn't it be much simpler to just upgrade to the new iPhone in Jan when you come back?

I think you should be able to put your Sim into a cheapo phone and then have them remove the data plan. They won't remove the data plan from your iPhone. I'm not sure what repercussions this would have on your contract terms... but I think as long as you keep some phone under contract with them, you should be OK.

In summary - buy a cheapo AT&T phone on eBay for like $10, and switch the SIM into that while you are gone.

The other option is to cancel your service altogether while you are gone. Paying the penalty may be cheaper than paying for multiple months of service you aren't even using.

Ask if they can put your account on hold. Mine is on hold for free since I am in the military. $5 still he's taken off my etf though.
