So even though I have a 2TB iCloud plan, when I ordered my iPhone 13 Pro, my iPhone 12 prompted me to ’prepare for my new iPhone’ by which created a temporary backup. I should have known something was weird because I had plenty of storage & up to date daily backups, I thought this feature was only for those without enough.

Now I’m on my new iPhone and it is still backing up to this “temporary backups”. I’ve deleted it and started over but it keeps going into temporary. Another strange thing is the backup is humungous. I use iCloud for everything (messages, photos, etc) so backups are only normally around 5GB or so. This seems to backup everything as is on my phone (backup is the same size as storage used).

Anyone else with this issue or know how to permanently stop using temporary backups?

Mine deleted itself after a few days. I had the same concern that it wasn't going away. But it eventually did. Give it a few days and see if it deletes itself.

I did restore to my new iPhone 13 on launch day so it’s been 5 days now. I was able to delete both the old phone temporary backup and the new phone temporary backup (it showed both under the temporary backups section).

I started a new fresh backup but when it completed, it’s back to temporary… I will keep an eye on it of course.

Does the prepare for new iPhone do anything special that regular backups don't do? That is, if you have been backing up to iCloud or Mac do you need this feature at all?

Doesn’t seem like it. I don’t know why it would be even offered to those that pay for iCloud storage and have up to date backups. The other thing i noticed is the backup size is HUGE it is the size of the entire used storage on my device. Even though photos, messages, etc are all syncing through iCloud and normally wouldn’t be included in the backup file itself.

Normally my backups would be about 4-7GB and mine is now 170GB with temporary backup!

Just wanted to update last night I deleted the "temporary backup" again, turned iCloud backup back on, and it is now working as expected. Backup size 3.7GB which is more realistic.
