Hi all, I currently have a 64GB iPhone. I’m having to temporarily downgrade to a 32GB iPhone 7 as I’ve broken the screen and having to send it off through my insurance (1st time I’ve ever broken an iPhone screen in 11 years)!

I am going to wipe my existing iPhone before sending it off and just set up a temporary Apple ID on it so they don’t have access to my photos / messages etc.

My question is, as I will be temporarily using a 32GB iPhone, when setting this up, what will happen in terms of storage as I’m currently using 50GB on my current iPhone. Im guessing I won’t be able to select a backup when setting up the iPhone as the backup will exceed the storage size of the temporary iPhone. So as far as I see it, I have two options:

  • Option 1 - set up temporary iPhone as a new iPhone which will only bring across iCloud data (photos / messages etc), however it will not bring across fitness data. Then when I get my fixed iPhone back I can restore from the original backup from today and lose any data from within the last week (I assume photos will still be safe though)?
  • Option 2 - as above and then when I get my fixed iPhone back, just restore from the latest backup (I think I will permanently lose my fitness data this way though)
  • Option 3 - set up temporary iPhone using current backup (although not sure if this is possible due to storage size issues)

Ultimately I cannot lose any current or NEW photos I take, but ideally don’t want to lose anything.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

If I recall correctly, the health data goes to iCloud. So, option #1 might work, just don't turn on Photos on the new device, to save space. Any health data from the temporary phone should be iClouded as well, which probably gets merged into main phone when that gets back.

Option 1 sounds ideal as you may use it as a back up for iCloud purposes.

Option 1. Make sure to turn on Optimize Storage for iPhone in the iCloud settings of Photos and Music if you use Apple Music.

The Fitness app is the companion app for Activity app on Apple Watch, its just showing you a boarder more detailed view of the Activity app. All apps and devices compatible with Apples HealthKit API (Diet apps, sleep tracking apps, anything health related including Activity/Fitness) share their data with HealthKit and that data is stored in iCloud ("Health").

I never restore from a back up when I get a new iPhone. I like having the opportunity to clean up my unused apps. That said I can see all my Fitness/Activity data back to the day I got my Apple Watch in 2017. I can see further back in the Health from my iPhone 6s that started tracking steps and such.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
Back the phone up to the computer, put the backup aside.

Set up the temporary phone as new.

When the replacement phone arrives, use Image Capture to copy whatever pictures you've taken off the phone.

Restore the original backup to the new phone.

It doesn't need to be any more complicated than that.
