macOS Terminal does not use colors for VIM

Hello everybody.

It's been a while since I am working with Mac OSX Leopard's Terminal for programming and such using the editor VIM, however I noticed that it does not use colors to highlight programming syntax and such. For a while I thought it was an inherent fault of Leopard's terminal but just recently I discovered that if I SSH into a Linux box and open VIM there, code is highlighted (so Leopard's terminal isn't inherently faulty but rather VIM could be.

Is there a way I can enable such color highlights in Leopard's VIM/Terminal? Any workarounds?

Thanks for your response. I was not sure if "highlighting" was the word I was looking for so I didn't know exactly what to search.

Besides, practically every other *nix has got that right in the first place.
