Hey, does anyone know if you are supposed to use the iTunes number transferrer first, and then call T-Mobile/Sprint/Verizon to tell them it's cancelling time, or do you have to cancel with the provider and then the number can be ported?

Yummy, a nice nasty surprise for T-Mobile. They're good people for the most part, except when they tried to tell me I could use the iPhone with them. At least now I get a huge a$$ bill mailed to me, rather than having to call them and have them argue the toss with me, and then have to deal with the bill. It's kind of sad, like a grasshopper begging for its life before you squish it. I guess I don't mind paying the horrible fee, it's a donation for them to suck less and then maybe when the next iPhone comes around, they can get it first.
Other way around. Open your account with AT&T and "port" your number over. Your old carrier will bill you, ETF included, and you won't have to do anything with them except pay.

and hey... question. what if i were to switch to AT&T for the iphone... and end up finding out that the coverage sucks and i want to go back to sprint? i know i can return the iphone for my money back... but how hard would it be to get back to sprint?

If you haven't paid your bill in a couple of months Sprint might give you some lip -- but I'd say most every company is happy to take your money, even if you left for a little while.
Not sure about the porting in that scenario -- should you want to go back to Sprint - I would call a Sprint rep and clearly explain your situation prior to dumping ATT -- assuming you want to keep your original #.
hmm... okay. thanks for the info. i've been with sprint for over 5 years and have paid almost every bill on time so i'm in very good terms with them.

Why not sign up for a new number on AT&T when you get your iPhone. If you like the service you can call customer service and change/port your number then.
I don't think so. You could always call.
The only issue I see is that contracts are usually attached to phone numbers and not accounts, but if you call within the return time frame you should be ok.
Right. I think I am gonna get a normal family plan plus freebie phones on Saturday. Then get the iPhone probably sometime next week. I gotta pay rent first.

Now that I think about it, I doubt you will be charged for doing this because you are charged for it anyway every month. I heard somewhere that every phone company charges you a few cents to a dollar for the ability to do it even if you never do.
Yeah I remember hearing about that. There was some pretty big hubub. I think I was in DC in the AF at the time.

I have 2 weeks left on my 2 year verizon contract. I already bought an iphone. I want my old number on the iphone.
Obviously, I'm not going to pay $175 to get out of the last 2 weeks of my contract. But I also don't want to wait 2 weeks to use my new toy.
So - can I create a new number with AT&T, and then have them take the old Verizon number in 2 weeks, when the contract is up? Would that work?

Yes, that is exactly what I'm doing. Already asked at ATT when I bought my phone. I activated and got a new phone number and will port over my "real" phone number next week. Just call ATT customer service and they can do it for you.
