Terminator Salvation

I'm trying to back up my copy of Terminator Salvation, but I'm not having any luck with Mac the Ripper, as it says the disc's protected by Arccos, and which eventually forces the App to close and crash. I've also tried the latest version of Handbrake on Snow Leopard, which I've also had no luck with.

Has any successfully managed to back this DVD up? Does anyone have any suggestions for using alernate applications?

I had problems ripping the disk as well using RipIt but was able to use Handbrake. You just need to have VLC installed in your Applications and Handbrake should have no problem. Also, instead of letting Handbrake auto search for the appropriate title (not alway accurate), open the disk in DVD player, play the movie and check for the title under the Go dropdown menu. The use the Open Source (title specific) option in Handbrake and input the appropriate title. When RipIt fails, this method has yet to let me down.

Hi thanks for the reply tbayrgs. I'm currently trying to rip the movie just using HandBrake, by clicking on File > Open Source > Then selecting the Disc. It scans the titles and loads them, but when I try ripping the longest file, which is around 1 hour 53 mins, it starts encoding, but then jumps to the end and gives me the usual 'Put down your cocktail, you encode is done' message.

I'm using OS 10.4.11 Tiger, which I'm sure doesn't run the latest version of HandBrake -do you think this would cause my problem?

I also have Fairmount and Popcorn 3, I don't suppose if you know if these Apps would be of any use?

A few points of clarification...

Are you trying to rip only (break the encryption) so you can make a copy of the DVD? Handbrake isn't a ripper, it's transcoding software that will allow you to convert to .MP4 or .MKV format. If you only want to rip and copy for backup, I believe Fairmount should be able to help. I've only used it once or twice so I'd refer you to their website for guidance. If you want to convert, Handbrake and VLC should be able to handle that task for you.

Your first post says you tried Handbrake for Snow Leopard but your last post says you're using Tiger (10.4.11)...which exactly is it? They latest version of HB, according to their website, is for 10.5/10.6 so you may have issues there. However, if you have an older version of Handbrake, it may still work but you need to follow the steps I outlined in my first post.

- First, make sure you have the VLC Media Player installed (make sure you download the version available for Tiger).

- Play the DVD using DVD Player on your Mac. Identify which title is the movie by going to Go > Title -- there will be a checkmark next to the appropriate title number.

- Open Handbrake (VLC doesn't need to be open). If automatically prompted to select a source, click cancel, go to File > Open Source (title specific) and select the VIDEO_TS folder on the DVD. You will then be prompted to input the specific title number--use what was identified when you played the DVD in DVD Player.

- Select whatever settings you prefer in Handbrake and go ahead and click Start.

If this doesn't work, you'll have to research some other alternative as I use Handbrake exclusively for my conversions and haven't had a Movie/TV show it couldn't handle yet, including Terminator Salvation.

Thanks for replying again. Ultimately I'm trying to produce a file I can drop into iTunes, then sync to Apple TV. I initially tried to use HandBrake on my girlfriends MacBook, which runs Snow Leopard and which I've also had a pretty good success rate with, when I've been struggling with a DVD on the Tiger version of HandBrake, that I'm running here, on my system.

Hope that clears that up, and I'll be sure to give what you've recommend a try, and I'll let you know how I get on.

Then you definitely should try go the Handbrake/VLC route--just select the Apple TV preset in Handbrake when you get to that point and you should have good results.
