I'm having a terrible time. I can't get video to my display. An HPZR24w. I like this display because it fits in the nook on my stand, and 1080P is enough for me. Nothing larger would fit. Problem - The 580X has HDMI, the HP has Display Port. This morning I went to Best Buy and got an adapter, an Insignia brand. Display Port Male, HDMI female. I've tried 3 Three HDMI cables, no luck. I know the DP on the monitor is good, I'm using it now with my old cMP and an RX580. Could the adapter be bad? It was brand new.

If I remember correctly, you can convert DP to HDMI passively without problem, but not the reverse (LVDS vs TMDS).

USB-C to DisplayPort is what you want. HDMI can't be adapted to DisplayPort.

Plug into one of the USB-C ports on the Mac Pro. Even though they're not on the back of the GPU, they still carry video from it.

I bought a DisplayPort to thunderbolt3/usb C cable inexpensibely from amazon and had no issues at all. Worked right off the bat.

flowrider just bought an actively powered HDMI ( out ) to DP ( in ) adapter cable from Amazon . The cable has a lot of decent reviews . So , is the key requirement there needs to be juice in the line for this to work ?

I don't know this adapter, but for HDMI to DP to work, a lot of things has to be changed, like 5V to 3V3 level shift and the GPU has to support dual-mode. Btw, will work only for displays that don't require bi-directional handshake with the GPU, some require, and the display must have a resolution supported by HDMI.

Btw, I'm no expert on this and I'm probably forgetting other requirements.

Had the same problem.
Tried the Best Buy adapter too...
It’s a DP to HDMI and not the other way around.
In my case, I was lucky enough that my monitor had a DVI in so I went HDMI to DVI and it works perfectly.
I bet something like this could work out:

But I didn’t try it personally.

I have a lot of USB-C/HDMI to DP/HDMI, at least 10 of them, half of them dont work regardless of the reviews. When I was searching I just bough 2-3 of them - different brands - and got one that worked for my setup, its a crap shoot really... at least now I have a truckload of cables I can try ^^

Whether a particular cable works depends on the combination of graphic card, computer and display you're using... That being said all Apple cables always worked, the problem is that they dont sell some combinations... and the belkin/whatever stuff they sell in the Apple Store is not better than random brands on Amazon in my experience.

The USBC to HDMI cables are particularly finicky, especially if you want 4k/60fps - a lot of them only do 4k/30 or no 4k at all.

The Amazon adapter worked thumbsup.gif I have now installed more RAM, my HighPoint 7103, my IO/Crest card, my HighPoint RocketU USB card. Everything's working. But, I can't seem to update the SSD on the HighPoint 7103 to Catalina. And I don't know if the T2 chip will let me start from "external" disks.

Once I sort out those things - I'll be good to go.

At some point, based on the review by Bare Feats, I will be getting a 5700 XT at some point, I posted his review in another thread.

Boot Recovery and enable External Boot with StartUp Security Utility.

For a MP7,1, only T2 storage are internal. SATA ports and whatever are connected to the PCIe slots are external.

Yes, I knew about Boot Recovery, but couldn't get it to activate with my Logitech KB. Tried an old wired Apple KB and got it to work. All setup, except for some more RAM coming and the 5700 XT which is yet to be ordered.
