TESCO iPhone Pricing UK Announced

I looked at the tariffs this morning and from what I can make out the £20 per month tariff works out at 150 minutes and 300 text. Is this correct? £60 a month doesn't go too far these days....

Thats rubbish! I was looking at the prices and thought how many minutes/texts do you get for it. Makes you wonder

Who does Tesco piggy back on - Orange or O2?

O2.

Half price for 5 numbers though so you can potentially get 300 minutes and 600 texts for £20 a month, which is insanely good value and a short contract length too!

The averaged cost is definitely NOT higher as you get to exit out of the contract 6 months sooner.

Example:
On Tesco - £222 + £20 a month = £462,
£462 + 6 months on SIM only (£15) = £552

On Orange - £96.50 + £30 a month = £636.50

NB: Monthly costs assume 17.5% VAT, phone itself at 15%.

Now of course, you get unlimited Internet for 6 months longer on Orange, but Tesco lets you stick to Apple's once a year upgrade path so you could get a brand new iPhone with 12 months more internet every year. Also Tesco gives you more minutes and texts (up to 300 mins/ 600 texts or at least 150/ 300 instead of 150/250).

P.S. Not forgetting 444 clubcard points when you buy the iPhone (£4.44 off) and 60 points a month thereafter (60p off).

This is the price that's going to make me finally splash for an iPhone. I don't need the 3GS, the 3G will do just fine, and I'm happy to lock myself into £20/month for 12 months. That's hardly any commitment at all compared to O2's £35/month for 18 months.

will Tescos 3G be the same as o2's? or will it be different??

Exactly the same, they use O2's network.

Any news whether Tesco will offer unlocked ones???

Every phone Tesco sells on their Tesco network is locked. Doubt the iPhone'll be any different.

I hope Tesco gets the 4G. I'm not all that impressed with the 3GS, but I would like a new phone and my brother gets staff discount with Tesco :D Plus 12 month contracts for the absolute win.

cool, btw they will be selling it from monday.

my mum gets staff discount should i get it on tesco or o2 or what ? any disadvantages of tesco ? im getting it on PAYG

The phone will have exactly the same 3G strength and it will be locked to O2 the same as if you have bought it from an O2 store from the start. The only difference is the contract prices and the shop.

Its very clever really that o2 are using their own Tesco network as the kind of Value iPhone package, and leaving the premium packages on o2. no reason they couldn't offer these on o2 of course, but banking on a great deal of lethargy on the part of most users, o2 will keep the high value ones, and those that want to leave go to their own network anyway, so the network connections total on which their share price is heavily based is maintained.

Clever.
