Test my DVD burner for Dual Layer burning?

How can I test to see if my Dual Layer DVD burner works?

The specs state my burner is capible. I tried once with a burn that needed the size but could not get it to work.

I was just using the Disk Utility to burn DVDs. Should I be using something else for that application software?
