Is there an app to block text messages from unknown/not in contact lists senders?

No need for an app.
You can activate a filter so messages from unknown numbers are suppressed and moved into a special folder:
Settings > Messages > Filter Unknown Senders
You can additionally report messages / numbers as spam.

I'm looking for a way to block all of the political/campaign texts... I probably get 3-5 texts every day... opting out (replying "STOP"), only validates the number that then gets sold to a new candidate or his PAC and then we get more and more of this crap.

Blocking the numbers doesn't work because all of this SPAM comes from different numbers.

Using the "filter" for unknown numbers is a joke because I then miss some important messages from customers... it's a no win situation.

I’m having the same issue would love a solution to this problem as well.
