Text box???

This is on wife's phone. When she enters messages, her text box is large like below. She taps the text area and the keyboard does not come up. She either has to go out and back in several times or bounce it. Anyone seen this?

It's been like that for all of us since 3.0. Randomly the box will be huge and no matter how much you tap you can't get the text box to show up. The only thing i've ever been able to do to fix it ( temporarily ) is the same thing you do ... Back out and restart the Text app.
