As far as freeware editors go, I'd suggest Smultron as well. Although, I'd probably look for an icon replacement set as well....the stock ones are AWFUL.
I recommend you try TextWrangler, BBEdit's free nephew, too. Very nice text editor with syntax colouring and built in s/ftp capabilities. This has been my first choice for all my web programming (mostly php, html and css) for the last couple of years (though at the moment I'm in the process of switching to Coda, not free, but oh so gorgeous and user-friendly).

Taco HTML Edit may be worth looking at, it fits into the free category, but not the tabs part.
On the flip side you do get live previews of HTML source and php code and it makes adding tables and images a snap.

I really like SubEthaEdit. It has gone from freeware to shareware, but there's a slightly older version that's still offered as freeware. It's what I've used for a few years now.

I'm using Taco aswell. Only thing I miss is integration with Cyberduck, so I can't edit pages directly on the webserver. But I don't know of a free solution for that.

That's the combination I used for ages (before changing to Transmit and just recently Coda). TextWrangler even has built-in s/ftp capability, so you don't even need Cyberduck for quick text edits on the server (though I always used Cyberduck and later Transmit anyway, found that easier...

TextMate is a geat editor, and it's exclusive to OSX. You have to pay for it, after the 30 day trial, but it's worth it.
If you don't want to pay, try jEdit. Unlike most Java GUI apps it doesn't suffer from speed problems. The interface looks almost, but not quite, completely OSX native. Plus, there are lots of plugins available for it.
