I bought the Text Free Unlimited app as an alternate way to send SMS messages w/o having to pay per each message, and whenever I receive a message, I get notified via the Mail app. However, I get notified around 10 minutes after the sender actually sent the message. I am on a strong Wifi network, and have full signal on 3g. Anyone know why its so delayed?

Is your email push? As far as I know, only MobileMe and Yahoo offer Push service.
If you have gmail and hotmail or other email service, iPhone checks around every 15 minutes. So, that may be the problem. :)

Yes, my email is from yahoo. Push notifications are on, and its set to fetch manually. Does the fetch have anything to do with it?

Well if your Push is on, then I don't know what the problem is. It doesn't matter if you put Fetch on manual. The push should be enabled.

Maybe the problem is from the app's end.

I has Text Free also and had the exact same problem. I wasn't able to find an workaround so I bought a new app called SMSenger. It's instantaneous and it works great. I heard new features may be coming out soon so get it now while it's still 99 cents. I've had it for about a week and have had no problems. I've had several tweets about it already, check it out: www.momentii.com

Yahoo's push email service is unreliable if the accounts of it here are any indication. That may be most of your problem.

i use Yahoo! and Gmail for my e-mails.

i noticed that Gmail doesn't update as fast as Yahoo! does on my iPhone.

i text by using @text.att.net method. i don't have any problems but it is 5-10 mins delayed unless i am checking it manually.

also i have noticed the push doesn't check too well after i jailbroke.

i guess i don't see the point in buying an App that texts through e-mail and then notifies you after IT gets your text via mail. so the server time+your push time..

i tried the infinite SMS app but even with backgrounder i didn't like it and felt that mail was more efficient and helped retain more battery throughout the day.

with that being said,

i do miss texting - but not enough to pay for SMS service.

I second that. I use yahoo email only to get notifications for beejive. Most times it works right away or very close to that, others it takes anywhere between a few minutes to 30.

I saw that you could register your number with them and the texts would come in to textfree whenever someone texts you. So if i call att and take the block off of my texting for a bit then register my number with them and then block my line again from recieving texts will i be able to recieve texts from people who send it to my number. I just use beejive for texting now and it works pretty good since i have a jailbroken phone and i can run it in the background.

I go to school at the university of toledo, and i use my school's email through exchange. When i use infinite sms on my ipod touch, i receive the email notification almost instantaneously. I'm not sure what may be different??? Just wanted to give my input.

hey, i just noticed that both the paid and free version of text free is unavailable from the app store. Any ideas why? Could it be the same reason infinite sms was removed?

actually no, just kidding, its available again (palm/forehead)... i was just about to buy the unlimited version and i kept on receiving the message that was unavailable when i clicked on it, both the lite and paid versions. I don't get it? Now it seems normal again...? But it brings me to another question, it it does get pulled from the app store (like infinite sms), will it still work for those who already bought it?

This app seems to have terrible reviews on iTunes.

SMSenger works for me!

This app seems to have terrible reviews on iTunes.

Text free I found it to be slow on the replies but in my case I just want to send a quick msg to a bunch of people and not have to retype it multiple times SMSenger is great for that. Also the text messages are free and in my financial situation I'm all over that. The app caught my eye when I saw it within the top 10 apps in the social networking category in the Canadian App store. The reviews are actually quite humorous.

On a related note, I recently I came across an interesting article describing the flaws of the review process on the app store. I take the reviews with a grain of salt. The app works for me!

Check this article out on the issues with the app store review process. It's quite interesting!:)
