Text message sound but no new text message

This problem just started this week:

Randomly, my iphone (v1, not 3G) will play the new text message alert sound, but I have no new text messages. I can't figure out if people are actually sending me texts or not. I don't have this sound set for any other alert, so I know it's the text message alert. I haven't recently changed any of my phone settings, so I don't know what's going on.

Has this happened to anyone else? Any ideas?
