I get in so much trouble often. For example: Today I am texting my grandson when my son texts me. Honestly, I thought I was still speaking with my grandson but I wasn't. Is there a way to stop messages from automatically opening when your texting someone? That could have been really bad. All three were apple phones

Ok, Today I am texting my grandson. He starts school Monday and I have messages open while texting. What appeared as his reply wasn't his at all but my son sending a text. How can I stop messages from doing that. I get in trouble all the time because of this. I answered thinking I am still talking to my grandson but I am not.

The only way this could happen is:
1) They share an Apple ID and the various devices are getting confused
or
2) Your son is texting you from your grandson's phone
or
3) Your grandson is texting you from your son's phone

Otherwise, what you are referring to is impossible.

When I am texting someone and I have messaging open and get a new text. The new text appears to be from the person I am texting but it is a totally new person. Just opens right up and I answer thinking I am still texting the original person.

Are you in a group chat?

Not at all! This has happened almost daily for my iPhone. I have truly gotten in trouble so many times. It's been awful. I tried a different messaging app and that didn't work either. Think the above notification thing I did today might be the trick as for the first time ever messages aren't opening automatically making it appear I am still talking to the same person. I am not but it appears that I am. I now finally have to close the one text and physically open the new one.

Adding to @ian87w's excellent suggestion, you can also assign a separate text tone to each contact by opening the Contacts app > select the contact > tap Edit > scroll to Text Tone > tap on it and select a specific tone for that person. Click the Done button when you've selected one.

If it makes it easier and consistent, you can assign the same ringtone for phone calls for that contact too.
