Text & Ring sounds despite mute switch

OK, so I set up the Do Not Disturb mode on my wife's phone, so she doesn't hear emails coming though all night long. I set the 'emergency bypass' on a couple of important contacts -- which on previous versions of iOS -- would play the text/call tones even when DND was active.

However, what appears to be happening now is that the sounds will play for those contacts even if the mute switch is set to silent. Imagine our embarrassment at text sounds playing at the movie theater and having absolutely no way to silence it, even with the mute switch.

I'm 90% certain this was not the behavior prior to 10.2.x, but I guess now I have a bit of doubt.

Seems odd that sounds would manage to bypass the mute switch. The 'emergency bypass' mode text even refers to the Do Not Disturb mode, but not the mute switch ("Emergency Bypass allows sounds and vibrations from this person even when Do Not Disturb is on." Emphasis mine).

I've tested this on two phones here, a 6S and a 6 Plus, both running the most current iOS (not a beta).

Can anyone confirm this? Is emergency bypass supposed to play sounds regardless of the mute switch position or is this a glitch?

If it's supposed to work this way -- how do you set the phone to mute email sounds at night but still allow important text messages from specific contacts come though???

Behaves the same on two phones, so clearly it's suppose to be working like this, but seems very counter-intuitive.

I was excited about it so that I could use it for messages with DND enabled, but when I realized it also bypasses the vibrate/silent switch its usefulness in that respect petty much went down the drain for me. It's basically as close to an emergency bypass as it gets as it just bypasses everything essentially and rings and vibrates no matter what.

I was excited about it so that I could use it for messages with DND enabled, but when I realized it also bypasses the vibrate/silent switch its usefulness in that respect petty much went down the drain for me. I guess I'm remembering it wrong it appears. I could have sworn that when iOS 10 first came out, it didn't bypass the mute switch. Apparently that's not correct. Bummer.

Thought I was going nuts when I couldn't stop the phone at the movie tonight.

I set up my wife with an emergency bypass on my iPhone and was surprised when it rang even though my iPhone was switched to silent, but after thinking about it it makes sense, this is an emergency bypass.

You can set up a group in contacts and allow them to bypass the DND.
That's what I have set up now to allow calls from family members when DND is set in the evening (no work calls!) but when the phone is switched to silent I get no sounds at all from it.

Agreed. And this I know. But unfortunately it doesn't do the same for text messages. No way to set it so VIP text messages make sound but not others.

Yes this gap for texts is unfortunate. I hope Apple expand DND to at least texts, if not also open it up to all notifications that are attached to a contact.
