This phone no longer has a provider, but I still would like to send messages like any iPod touch/iPad can through my email using wifi, but the iPhone doesn't even seem like it gets those options.

Any way to trick it or a program to download that can text like an iPod touch?

I'm not seeing an option to even login through my AppleID in settings (under messages) or in the actual Messages program.

Is that a 5.0+ feature?

Figures =/
3g doesn't support iOS 5.
I wonder if there's any program that can do what apple can't for me.

As Applejuiced said its a dinosaur that may or may not support google voice or try pinger you can send texts and calls for free over wifi but whether they work on your device I have no clue

Not sure what is still compatible with the iPhone 3G/iOS4, but there are several free text apps like Google Voice, Text Free, textPlus, etc that will give you a fake phone number so others can text you like a normal phone

And of course the apps that connect to desktop IM platforms like Gtalk, AIM, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, Skype, etc

And then the proprietary chat and messaging apps like Kik, Whats App, Kakao Talk, LINE, etc

3G & even iOS3 work fine with Google Voice PLUS GV & GV+ from Cydia.

The 3G works fine as an iPOD Touch 3G if you unlock and add a "pay as you go" data plan.

If you are going to use as wi-fi only would suggest "Wi Fi Fo Fum" from Cydia.

The iPod Touch 3rd generation had 3G(s) internals. You're thinking of the 2nd generation iPod Touch.
