HI all, I hope someone has an idea on this....I use Textedit a lot, it's simple....but for awhile now, if I have not opened it for a little while (a few hours?), it opens right away to the blank screen, but then I get a spinning beach ball for about 5-7 seconds before I can type or do anything with the app. I tried RTF format, went back to text format, and today to see if it helps I clicked the button to reset all the preferences to default - although I haven't made any changes in a long time.

It feels like it's trying to do something to the internet - to iCloud maybe. I don't see any settings for that though.

I am on a MacBook Pro 2021 16", MacOS 12.5.1. It's occurred on at least 2 prior releases though, if not more.

Any ideas? Thank you!

When I open TextEdit, it shows the default save location as iCloud, something I didn't set. I haven't used TextEdit for at least a couple of years. Check to see if you've got a TextEdit folder in iCloud. It's easy enough to designate the default save location on your Mac instead.

@WildSky thanks! I found this terminal command turns off the default to save to iCloud, although the article was written when Mountain Lion was out:

defaults write NSGlobalDomain NSDocumentSaveNewDocumentsToCloud -bool false

I'll see if that works - thanks!
