Hi Forum!

I have an iPhone 3G with the TxtFree Unlimited app installed. I have a question regarding incoming texts. Is there anyway for TxtFree to notify me of a text that is recieved instead of having the incoming text be sent to the SMS Text program that comes with the iphone?

If im not being clear please let me know. I dont know if im being clear in my question.

Incoming texts are "pushed" to TextFree Unlimited app

They come as push notifications which the preferences are selected at the Settings -> Notifications -> TextFree

So far there's no other way for the incoming texts rather than to be pushed directly to your app.

Hrm. Thats strange! My settings for the TextFree app are all set to ON regarding notification!

Any other ideas? I go to settings > notifications > Textfree > basges *ON* sounds *ON* alerts *ON*.

:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:

What do you mean about other ideas? Have you tried matching your number to the app? (I forgot the specific option)

By ideas, i meant suggestions.

And yes, i have registered with the TextFree app and it is matching.

This is ODD. all notifications are turned on. but i still get no notifications!

so what is the purpose of registering with Textfree? (i.e matching your number?)

People can send a text to the textfree email they give you and it goes to your textfree app. It's a free text message... come on people this is pretty simple stuff here...

Dude, read the above carefully before you chime in.. Everyone understands the purpose of textfree e-mail. The question was - what was the purpose of registering your phone number with TF. The whole idea here is to bypass "traditional" carrier SMS.

So do I understand this correctly , that you can't actualy send a standart SMS to someone ussing the textfree app?

If you click options in the programs it states:

"Optionally register your number with the Textfree network. This way others on Textfree can send texts to your phone number instead of your @textfree.us address."

Basically will tell Textfree to associate your phone number with your textfree acct. That way all messages sent from other textfree users to your number will go to your textfree app.

If a person without textfree texts your number it will go to reg sms app.

You may send SMS messagse and receive to anyone with a mobile phone. Your address will just be yourusername@textfree.us not your phone number

So this sound like a yes to me. A TxtFree Unlimited users can NOT get a regular SMS. They can respond to a message I send , but they can not initate an SMS that showes up in the TxtFree Unlimited app.

I tried to send a regular SMS from a regular phone to my address at "yourusername@textfree.us" , it didn't work as it only allowed numbers to be entered.

2) Also what does a NON TxtFree Unlimited user have to add to its contacts, so when I send them a text ussing TxtFree Unlimited , it shows up as me ? Not some randome , always differant number.

3) How to I stop TxtFree Unlimited from creating new threads on the other phone ? Every text I send to the same phone , it needs to continue the same thread on the other phone. This workes if I send a text ussing SMS, but from TxtFree Unlimited , it seems to always change the orginianter number oppsoed to ussign the same one.

#2...I have no clue.......I think what ever nick name you type in, that is what the text shows up under.

#3....I dont think there is a way. Each time you send a text, textfree generates a different code for that text. So, they would have to come up with an update to take care of that. For now, its going to show up as a new message each time. Correct me if I am wrong people.....

Sorry to derail the topic! but I dont want to start another Thread for a question that can be answered in this one; but...Will the Textfree App work if I'm not connected to WiFi? And I'm running off my data plan?

Yes it will. No wifi required......

many flaws , I will try to get my money back.

The description for this app is false advertiesment ,
It states it will notify you of new text messages
even when you are not in the app. * BS , you can not even*
receive text messages if you are in the app. ( only replies to
your text messages )

Sorry-I get text messages ALL THE TIME with textfree-even if phone is in sleep mode.

You are confused.

A text message is send to a phone number and needs to be sendable from any cell phone with text support.

So a text message initiated from a cell phone to my iPhone # , will never be received be TextFree Unlimited, but it goes to the iphone built in text message app. Nothing free about that if you get charged for receiving text messages. With the current title and description this app is a total scam.

As the TextFree Unlimited app doesn't give you a second personal phone # to give to your friends just for texting purposes , its just not possible.

I tried to text a message from a non iPhone cell phone with text support , to the e-mail address TextFree Unlimited gives you , but that was not possible as it only allowed #s to be entered.

So the only thing this app can claim is that it can do is "send free unlimited texts", but it can not receive text messages. It should make this very clear in the title and first paragraph of the description of this app.

It kind of can receive a text message that are a reply to an TextFree Unlimited app initiated text message. But it really can not even make that claim as it doesn't work like it does on all other cell phones with text support. As each reply creates a new thread Totally useless.

...

Textfree gives you user@textfree.us. People can txt you directly at that address. I get all the time. On iPhone you can't enter @ so a person with an iphone would only be able to reply to you. An unlimited amount of times.

Even on a razor phone you could sent txt to an email address so on some level this is a limitation on iPhone end as well.

Most people I speak with that have iPhones have some sort of Aim client installed or email so this has never really been an issue.

To sum though I don't find misleading. I can text as much as I want and I can receive as much as I want.

All this is explained in the app information. It tells everyone to note that if someone sends you a text outside the textfree app it will be received as a regular SMS message through your phone number.

And if you truly want to initiate a text message and have it sent to the textfree user, you have to send it as if it was an e-mail to username@textfree.us. some phones support email and i tried it on my laptop - worked fine.

For me, what I basically tell my friends, if they want to shoot me a text just reply to one of my older texts that I used w/ the appso i can recieve it w/ textfree. I thinks it's not too much to ask...
