Its the end of the world as we know it
Meh...I feel fine....

My iPhone 7 never does this but my wife’s SE does this constantly. Turning iMessage off/on helps as does restarting the device, but it is an annoying bug.

Yeah, same here! (S) is ridiculous. Hopefully Apple gets it together in iOS 12.

Have you tried turning iMessage off and back on? It can usually temporarily fix the problem when iMessage is out of order. Resetting your Date & Time Settings can be a temporary fix too.

Unfortunately I don't think the problem will be fixed for good until the next major iOS update.

It happens on MacOS too and started at the same time so this looks like a server-side issue tbh rather than the device, and it likely started as they started work on iMessage on the cloud...

This process fixed the issue for several of my friends:

-----

This works on all Modern devices up to iOS 11.2.2

-Settings > General > Date and Time > Toggle off Automatic Date and Time

-Settings > Messages > Toggle off iMessage

-Settings > FaceTime > Toggle off FaceTime

-Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network settings

Once the phone restarts, toggle Automatic Date and Time, iMessage, and FaceTime back on.

Older messages may still be out of order, but new ones should come in just fine.

You can also just restart the phone. I had 100 plus messages out of order. After restarting they all went back into their proper place.

Well, everyone I knew who was experiencing issues had no luck with restarts...but everybody’s issues were fixed after following the steps I posted.

I have that issue with my iPhone 7 and I found if you do a hard rest, it does fix it for a while. My wife will message me and the message doesn’t sound right, then I realize it’s out of order.

Sounds like the process that I posted works for a few days, but ultimately everyone has gone back to receiving out of order texts again.
