I’m wondering if Team Fortress 2 Mac is at least compatible (although maybe sluggish?) on either of these Core 2 Duo Macs from a few years back. Anyone tried one of these?

* 2006 white iMac 2.33GHz, with the optional NVIDIA 7600GT (256 VRAM)

* 2007 Santa Rosa MacBook Pro 2.2GHz, with NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT (128 VRAM)

I expect to crank the detail/res down and STILL not get fully smooth motion... but will it run?

Thanks!

(The official Mac requirements for TF2 match Portal, but I’ve heard that people can get TF2 running on machines that won’t run Portal. Plus, I don’t know what is or isn’t "GeForce 8 or higher.")

Thanks for the link (and 8xxx clarification)! Sounds like the MBP is OK, at least.

The 7600 user in that thread seems to be on Windows, whereas TF2’s Mac requirements are higher. I don’t think there’s a Mac demo I can try, so if anyone has run TF2 on a 7600 iMac, that would be interesting to know.

(It might even help that I’m still on 10.5.x Leopard with that iMac; didn’t the NVIDIA driver problems start with 10.6.4?)

Can't you download the game for more than once when you've paid for it if you're using the same Steam account on both computers? At least you were able to download the Mac version for free if you had bought the PC version before so maybe you can download it for both computers without paying extra?

I don’t own it yet—and one of the computers is not mine (I’m checking for a friend who lives in another country).

I only have the iMac.

Valve's Source games for Mac don't run on the GeForce 7xxx due to missing OpenGL required extensions in the drivers. It will run on the MacBook Pro, but I don't know how fast, should run fine though. In Windows it will run fine on both machines.

Thanks. I knew first-hand that Portal won’t run (for now anyway), but I wasn’t sure if it applied to all Source games. I ran across a post somewhere with someone saying TF2 ran on his 7600 Mac, but most likely he was using Boot Camp and didn’t understand the question!

TF2 runs well on my MacBook Pro with the 8600M.

Great to hear. I plan to replace my old iMac, but my friend’s not replacing his MBP :)
