I came here not knowing much about jailbreaking but after some great advice from the guys mentioned in this thread and a couple of days of research... I've managed to successfully jailbreak my iphone 3gs. ^_^

Thanks! Now to troll the forums to find some cool threads on what I can do with it now :D!

Feel free to let me know what apps are good from Cydia/Icy.

Thanks again, and to this forum for being so helpful.

Just as a note, Cydia & Icy don't play together very well lately.

I would use Cydia to remove Icy.

Can cause issues if both are installed, especially if you installed both thru Pwnage Tool at the same time.

Two reminders:

Once Cydia updates after being used the first time, click "Make my Life easier" and store your SHSH files
If you installed Open SSH, change your root and mobile passwords right away. You will need Mobile Terminal from Cydia to do so.

Welcome to the world of jailbreaking. :)

For starters I would check out Lockinfo. It is, in my opinion, far and away the most useful jailbreak package (read about it here) followed very closely by SBSettings.

Good luck and have fun!

SBSettings is THE reason I jailbreak. Also, OP, if youre into to buying things through Cydia, try BiteSMS. Its a month long trial and is AMAZING.

Hey guys,

Don't worry I've done my research so changing both my passwords from alpine to something a little more secure was the first thing I did :) Thanks for the reminder though. I had no idea that icy and cydia is a bad combo though I'll remove icy now.

I don't really want to sound negative but yeah Icy didn't seem very good anyway, not a lot to choose from imo. Cydia however is great. I'm surprised how few apps are actually available to buy though, there's loads of free ones and about 20 you can buy? Unless I'm mistaken.

I have downloaded LockInfo and I have to agree it's awesome! I've had a go with Winterboard too which seems fairly good but I'm still looking for a good theme I can settle with ^_^!

I saw someone on a youtube tutorial using winterboard to hold all of their custom sms tones... how the devil do you do that?

^_^ I'll check out this SBSettings

in cydia , the section "themes (sounds)" contains custom tones, lock noises etc. If you want to customise yourself I would download 1 to learn the file names and extensions..; rename the sound files you want to use and ssh your own sounds directory into winterboard .

Ahh cool thanks for the advice I'll have a look.

I've had a go at SSH and it's straightforward enough which is good.

The one thing I'm having trouble with atm is how to delete Icy. I have download cydelete so when I hold down on its icon it now has a cross but after i delete it it randomly will be there again later... :D? any ideas?
