I have not heard it mentioned yet, so I thought I might point out the fact that Apple’s newest line-up of iPhones are FINALLY eligible to serve as “data-only” eligible devices, just like the iPad cellular line-up, thanks to the implementation of eSim technology.

This is due to the fact that the eSim allows for a new line to be added that serves as a data only line. (GigSky and many others). The eSim does NOT necessarily need to be activated as a PHONE line. (At least not on unlocked devices)

This will have a number of implications, not the least of which is the ability to move to a less expensive data-only plan while still offering phone/sms functionality provided by the many VOIP and similar apps & services.

This could also lead to increased competition for your cellular $$, and falling rates to go along with it. (T-mobile, are you listening?) Think “buy-as-you-go” data plans, rather than monthly voice&data plans...

Anyway, I’m sure others will chime in w/ the pluses and minus’, but personally, I’m excited about the potential.

I don't see how this is related to eSIM.

Plenty of people are using tablet data-only plans in their smartphones. Carriers roll out two-tiered pricing for data-only tablet plans vs. smartphone plans to maximize profit, not because of limitations with the technology.

“Plenty of people are using tablet data-only plans in their smartphones”....in their smartphones or in their iPhones (non-jailbroken)?

And this now works in their 2018 iPhones via eSim or nano-sim, BTW.

Smartphones includes iPhones. This has been working for years.

Another nice benefit is that phones can't be blacklisted anymore while using the eSim.

That’s not true either. The phone still has an IMEI that can be blacklisted. Even if you didn’t know that, common sense would tell you carriers would never allow such a thing.

This is quickly becoming the thread of untruths.
