Hi !!!

I recently bought an ibook, (not yet delivered). I will be using an audio recording software called Audacity to do voice recording and I will also be using two software programs for architecture - Archicad and Vectorworks.
Will i need to update the RAM to 1.5 GB, (by buying an extra 1 GB), or should i be ok with 512 MB.

Who do you recommend me to buy from? Is, in your opinion, Data memory systems the best source to buy quality products, with good prices, are they honest. Who else would you recomend, if not them?

If i were to order from Data memory systems, which memory should i get (out of the four that they propose for the 12" ibook).

General rule of thumb: always buy as much RAM as you can afford. 512MB RAM is decent, but more is better. Not sure how much RAM the apps you mentioned use, but it couldn't hurt. Like a RAM upgrade probably wouldn't do much good if you were just doing Word, email, internet, etc. But it would be beneficial if you were doing Photoshop or video editing.

As far as RAM manufactures are concerned. I don't think I've heard of Data Memory Systems - doesn't mean they're bad - but I know people here love Crucial RAM.

Buy the 1GB stick regardless of what you are doing. Will make everything work much better. Upgraded mine, and very happy with it. Not big $$$, so just go for it....
 
your asking in a forum full of ram lovers, SO HELL YEA MAX THAT BABY OUT!! ..i think data memory is your safest bet, but newegg.com is the cheapest by far...
 
Max it out, just bought a new ibook a week ago, that following tuesday my 1 gig from crucial was on a truck headed for me. Its the most cost effective way to squeeze as much power from your machine as possible.
 
3 tips regarding RAM:

- Max it out

- Don't buy it from Crucial...make a statement against their pricing games

- Buy it from OWC
 
As stated above, max out the RAM... by all means if you can

The following statement appears on the OWC website: "OWC Memory has been tested and is found 100% compatible all Apple Firmware versions including the latest 4.1.x & 4.2.x updates. Many people have experienced problems with memory after installing this latest update, but OWC has always provided memory fully meeting Apple stated specifications and as such has not been subject to these problems."

They claim 100% compatibility and the like, but then the firmware update statement is somewhat disconcerting. Have others experienced computer memory problems that they refer to and, if so, what corrective action had to be taken?
 
I haven't had any problems, but then again, I use OWC memory and am therefore apparently "not subject to these problems"...sweet. But I'm sure it's a small percentage of users who have a problem, and I'm sure that as long as you buy RAM with a lifetime guarantee you'll be fine.
 
I just got my 1 gig stick from Crucial the other day and it was so easy to install into myPB. I love the speed of my 15" with a 1.5 gig of RAM.
 
get the extra ram...don't buy from crucial (i agree with the other post about crucial's stupid pricing schemes)...enjoy your sped-up ibook.

What is this? I have tried their website from multiple browsers, even after clearing cookies, and the prices are always the same (at least on the same day).

I'm also interested in knowing what the crucial pricing game is?

They offered me 179$ (14$ more than OWC) for the 1GB RAM (PB G4 1.5 Ghz 12').

The reports are that Crucial may from time to time use dynamic pricing: That is, based on the contents of your cookies (showing what you had previously searched for on the Crucial site) and possibly your browser and OS version, their site calculates different pricing for the same part.

The charitable would say that this is offering a discount to certain people; the skeptical would say this is extracting extra money from the unwary. Other major shopping sites have the ability to do this as well -- whether they have it activated or not you don't know.
