I've always had a bit of a smile at Macintosh users who mock the System Tray in Windows and then load their Menu Extras with superfluous garbage. Although, granted, there aren't many Menu Extras that pop up critical information in a balloon format, but still...

That's the upside to Apple leaving the Menu Extras API closed (yeah I know there are still hacks), it keeps is clean and sane.
Plus Menu Extras are actually, you know, useful most of the time.

The point remains, though, that I chose for that to be there, and I like it. I hate the windows one too because it always closes so quickly I can never get to the stuff I want to, and end up opening it 6 times....grrr

I wasn't debating the value of one over the other; Menu Extras is nowhere near as obnoxious as the System Tray, but I was simply saying that I find it somewhat amusing when a common complaint was the amount of "junk" in the system tray. Then I see screenshots with about 10 or so Menu Extras and I find it a bit amusing. Of course, that's not to say those're the same people who were complaining about the System Tray in the first place.
Although I will assert my opinion that a lot of the Menu Extras -- third-party ones, that is -- have about an equal value to third-party System Tray objects. That is to say, there's a lot of junk amongst the few gems. The worst difference being that too many Windows apps want to, as has been said, put an icon in the System Tray.
A perfect example of the balloon pop-up issue in the System Tray? Try the prompt to enter your credentials for a PEAP network using WZC. That's the most obnoxious thing I have ever seen.

Unless you turn the balloon notifications off in the preferences. Seriously, I rarely get any notifications from the system tray. When I send out an email, the virus scan runs, and shows a little pop-up but that's about it. Of course, I'm not one who load superfluous crap on windows start-up and I try to keep the system as lean as possible (unless I'm trying to find a program that does something very specific).
