Indeed. I wasn't debating the value of one over the other; Menu Extras is nowhere near as obnoxious as the System Tray, but I was simply saying that I find it somewhat amusing when a common complaint was the amount of "junk" in the system tray. Then I see screenshots with about 10 or so Menu Extras and I find it a bit amusing. Of course, that's not to say those're the same people who were complaining about the System Tray in the first place.
Although I will assert my opinion that a lot of the Menu Extras -- third-party ones, that is -- have about an equal value to third-party System Tray objects. That is to say, there's a lot of junk amongst the few gems. The worst difference being that too many Windows apps want to, as has been said, put an icon in the System Tray.
A perfect example of the balloon pop-up issue in the System Tray? Try the prompt to enter your credentials for a PEAP network using WZC. That's the most obnoxious thing I have ever seen.
