Hi,

It appears a number of people have this issue and, as it's frequent, you'll likely know exactly what I'm talking about or not have a clue if you're a lucky one that doesn't.

Basically, when watching HTML5 videos in Safari or Chrome (I haven't tested Firefox), the system will randomly freeze. For me this is triggered 90% of the time by closing or switching from a YouTube video to another. If it freezes when I close the tab it will quite often do so during the animation of enlarging the other tabs to occupy the space left by the closing tab. In this case, if I wait about 2 minutes, it will unfreeze.

However, if I switch tabs and it freezes, it rarely unfreezes. Most of the system is unresponsive. The time in upper right corner remains stuck, no keyboard commands or mouse clicks work. I can't force quit anything, open menus, swipe, or do anything other than a hard reset. Interestingly, my mouse cursor will still move, whether from the trackpad, USB of Bluetooth mouse. Music that was playing will continue to play. So it feels like it's the UI that's frozen and most background tasks will continue. I can't access any background tasks so it still results in a hard reset.

10.11.2 has not fixed this problem. It's also introduced another. I can no longer maximise YouTube videos. The screen darkens, the controls move to the bottom but neither the picture or the controls expand to fill the screen. I can shrink them again and full-screen them again with the same issue. It has also caused my system to freeze after switching to another tab.

As I've read about lots of variations of this HTML5 video freeze and not seen it addressed by Apple in remedies or in the 10.11.2 bug fix, I'm now worried it's a hardware issue affecting a number of their devices. I've a 15" rMBP from mid-2014. Support just told me to try resetting the NVRAM, SMC, etc. and wipe the system. The usual suggestions, but didn't mention any familiarity of the problem or any direct solutions, so I'm unsure if they're being disingenuous as there's no outright solution yet. If you Google it it's certainly happening quite a few people.

This, absolutely is an issue I've been facing ever since upgrading to Safari 9.

If I revert back to Yosemite, with Safari 8.xx it works like normal.

Twitch.tv is a site I use a lot and because I don't have Flash installed (and nor do I intend to) I have to deal with their edition of a HTML5 player, which causes exactly this to occur. I have to press ALT-T (on their site this takes you to a cinema view) and full screen that to make it work.

Minor frustration but it has happened exactly as you've described on other sites too.

Is your laptop also a mid-2014 model of some sort?

I mentioned this happened in Chrome also. It DID happen in Chrome and Safari when I had Yosemite. I've gone back to using Chrome lately out of concern for the amount of times Safari is freezing, thinking it wouldn't make a difference. So far I haven't had a freeze using Chrome.

I wish Apple would either acknowledge whether this is software or hardware bug and address it. I'm left in limbo wondering whether I should be looking at returning the laptop or waiting for an OSX update. If it wasn't a work computer that I rely on all day it wouldn't be as precarious a situation.

Just to add...

I checked when Safari 9 was realised: September 2015. So I had these issues in Safari 8 on Yosemite also.

Mine is a Macbook Pro 15" mid-2014 model yes. Mine does not do that whilst on Safari 8 on Yosemite.

Very weird

Having this issue in full screen mode only. Not an issue when played normally.

Strange, I never had any issue with YouTube on my Late 2011 MBP since the first Beta of El Capitan. I only use Safari with HTML5.

Strange, I never had any issue with YouTube on my Late 2011 MBP since the first Beta of El Capitan. I only use Safari with HTML5.

I think it's an issue with certain hardware rather than El Capitan*. It doesn't appear to affect the majority but there's still a large amount of users seeing this issue. The main pattern I'm seeing is that it's affecting mid-2014 hardware. The effects are slightly different from person to person but appear to revolve around intermittent issues with HTML5 video and freezing.

As far as I'm aware, Apple have yet to acknowledge this and there's been no independent conclusion thorough enough to know if it's a hardware or software issue that can be rectified with a firmware or operating system point release. There have been some suggestions that it's a graphic-card switching issue but I haven't experienced anything to suggest this myself, nor have I seen a thorough enough examination of this in the mid-2014 models which are predominantly experiencing the issue.

*The problem has been occurring in El Capitan and Yosemite mostly because few are running 2014 hardware with Mavericks or earlier. If everyone was running Mavericks it may or may not have similar results. That said, some reports suggest that they only noticed the problem on El Capitan or Safari version (see above). It's difficult to conclude it didn't exist before then but never materialised.
