ok, so back in october about 1/4 of my scroll wheel (between the menu & the back button) stopped responding. Then in November the scroll wheel stopped responding at all sometimes when I turned it on, ussually if I toggled the hold switch on/off it would start working again. Well not today, and after a paticulary stressfull day at work (with no iPod) I'd had enough.

It's off warrenty anyways but shouldn't a $400+ purchase last more than 14 months? I'm not trying to create another "iPod's dirty little secret" thing here. I'm just kinda pissed.

Hey look, it still docks..sorta...actually it's been displaying the do not disconnect message ever since I plugged it in for kicks. I imagine that will be the last of it's battery life seeing as there isn't anything there to tell it to stop :p

I'm not a fan of extended warranties. In my opinion, it's saying "We don't trust this product to last 3 years". And as dornoforpyros says, it should last longer than that for such an expensive item. Quite a few things I've had have died just outside the basic warranty period (both Apple and other random things) and it really gets me. If companies offered a 3 year warranty as standard, it would say a lot more about the quality of their stuff.
 
Well regardless of how long you "think" warranties should be, the point is that a $400 mp3 player should last you more than 14 months. I've had mine for around 18 months, and if it died after 24 months, I think that would be reasonable. However, since I have a friend with a 1G iPod, and it still works, I think my 4G 20GB iPod should still work fine after 3 years, as the HD is newer tech than the one used in the 1st Gens, and my iPod itself is much newer than my friend's.
 
I've had my 3G for over 24 months, still going strong. Battery life is still suprisingly good too, my baby is obviously a little trooper :p

You are absolutely correct that a product, especially at that price point should last longer than that. I had a 1st gen. iPod and the power supply (yes it used to ship with a wall plug) died. It was specifically not covered by the warranty, IIRC. I complained until they sent me a new one.

More often than not, Apple will bend the rules to accommodate their customers requests. The squeaky wheel gets the oil, my friend.

BTW, I am still waiting for the results of the iPod battery settlement. My iPod does about 1/2 to 3/4 hours per charge.
 
i know how to make the screen go off...unplug it! lol, sad to see it happen that it isnt working right, my buddy had an ipod mini 1g and it screwed up apple twisted the warranty and replaced his with another mini they had left over. Id call apple up and get them to do something with it.
 
eh I'm sure i could shove everything back inside and take it back where I bought it (except for the fact that's 2 hours way in the city) and get some dumbass clerk to replace it. But that's alot of work and like I said, it is out of warrenty.

I'm still on the fence about buying a new one, I just wanted to show everyone the guts inside. Anyone wanna buy some iPod pieces? 40gb 4th gen?
 
I had the EXACT same problem. What fixed it for me was to strongly blow air through the part where you connect the cable to, after that it would work but then after I turn it off and on the next day would it not respond, I would blow in the port again and it would work.
 
Hm my two first gen 5 gb ipods are still running strong, with new batteries of course in the hands of friends. Perhaps, just perhaps, in the manufacturing process you'll get a bad seed somewhere in the assembly line and one out of 10000 ipods is going to screw up. You got it. Next time someone else will. Its how the game of consumer electronics works, its kind of like a lottery with the odds dramatically in your favor.

Same goes for my 2G iPod. I bought it at least 40 months ago and I'm still very content with it. Battery time isn't the greatest anymore with about 7-8 hours, but it's enough for a week of commuting for me.
 
think what you want, the fact of the matter is you are out of 400 dollars if a product breaks outside of the free warranty

Why yes I am over-paid and have no love in my life, thanks for asking.
