Hi my name is Jason, and I got the insanely lucky opportunity to pick up an ram/hdd-less and untested dual 2.7 ghz G5 Power Mac for only $3 from a Goodwill Computer Works that was about to send it off to be scrapped.
Too make a long story short, one PRAM zapping, SMU reset, a 250gb sata hdd, and 4x1gb of DDR1 ram later, and the "Silver Beast" roared back to life!
So now it's currently running MacOS Tiger (10.4.11) and Leopard (10.5.8) and the rest of the system is stock with a Radeon 9650 as the gpu.
So I am wondering what kind of repairs/upgrades will I can do to max this machine out. My main plan is to use it mostly for legacy mac software and game support, but possibly a Mac file server for my Power PC G3 (Beige) and G4 (iBook) laptop.
So I wish to know the following before I can continue with this project of mine.
1. Can I replace the front panel board with one from a "Late G5"? Aside from the power button, all 3 ports in the front are corroded and inoperable so it will need to be replaced.
(Answered: NO only "Early 2005" or earlier panel boards will work.)
2. Can it run MacOS Jaguar (10.2.8) and Panther (10.3.9)?
I know the earlier G5 models shipped with these OS's (though 10.2.7 was a special build for the 1st gen G5's) but if possible I would love to have them all on this machine along with MacOS 9.2.2 "Classic Mode" so I can retire the Old G3 (Beige) I have for running 9.2.2 and 10.2.8
(Answered: "YES native 10.3.9 support with this system. NO native 10.2.8 support with 970FX CPUs, but possible build modification can be done.)
3. What is the fastest "overall" gpu I can upgrade too?
If question 2 is true then I assume the Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Edition is the fastest to work with all 5 MacOS versions, if not I was planning to get a Radeon X800 XT or a Geforce 6800 GT instead.
(Answered: 9800 Pro- Best compatibility and native macOS 10.2.8 (with 970FX modified patch) support, X800 XT- Best Value, 6800 GT- Best Performance but most expensive)
4. It seems the Liquid Cooler leaked at one point, but has "sealed" itself up, but should I worry about it leaking again if I put this machine back in to regular use. Also do these need to be refilled/serviced or are they closed loop?(I'll upload a pic of it later.)
5. Is there a solution to wash/remove the corrosion from the case panel with out further damaging the finish look it has?
6. (Minor) TenFourFox and HD video playback seems quite a bit slow, I assume due to cpu limitation, but I've seen other post around the net saying that the Dual 2.7 ghz model should handle this just fine. I have a pc for all this anyway, but just curious to see if it's my machine only or just a limitation of the specs.
7. (Minor) Does any one have a link to download the Q Emulator (Power Mac QEMU port) version Q-0.9.1d118 beta? I wanted to run some older windows emulation on here, but only the Q-0.9.0a89 version seems to be avalible now that the creators site is down.
If anyone has an solutions to these problems let me know!
