Yet another chance for Apple to something, anything with ATV...and nothing but complete silence. Also, being WWDC, if there were going to be a new ATV that was to incorporate some kind of App Store...you'd think this would be place to announce something. Looks like we got at least another year to wait for anything at all...or Apple is going to do what most companies do when they go silent about a product...discontinue it. Apple is far more unpredictable than most companies though...so who knows...

...was also disappointed that the Ipod Touch got the silent treatment. But that will have another chance in Sept (as well be the ATV, but a diminished one at that)

Dude, its the developer's conference. The lack of mention of one product does not foretell its imminent demise. They didn't update the iMacs, should I be worried?

The iPhone got the major focus because so many programmers are flocking to the app store—both experienced and those that are getting into programming as a result of the iPhone. The iPod snub is not /that/ surprising, since it has a history of receiving updates as they trickle down from the new iPhones.

Did /anyone/ really expect to see /anything/ about the AppleTV? No. It is of no interest whatsoever to programmers. I know people have hopes that there will some kind of app store or whatever... but really? Did you /expect/ that?
The AppleTV is just not something that they were ever, /ever/ going to update or spend time on at the WWDC.

WWDC is not the right venue for Apple TV. Apple TV is not a platform (yet). An update is coming in September.

Here's a few things to cheer you up:

- QuickTime X has an export to Apple TV preset built in to its "share" feature

- Apple Execs have said that Snow Leopard will be the foundation for Mac, iPhone, iPod and Apple TV from here on out. Therefore, we can expect an update to move from the 10.4 code-base to the 10.6 code-base with QuickTime X for Apple TV sometime soon. Also, this gives us hope that a new QuickTime X-compatible hardware acceleration graphics card will be included in a future hardware revision (1080p anyone?)

- Snow Leopard has a new feature for Apple TV and those that share files between Macs. If you have an AirPort or Time Capsule, your Mac will now wake up from sleep to sync with your Apple TV or share files to another Mac, then go back to sleep once the syncing or sharing is done.
 
Actually I think we might see something earlier. They did say S. Jobs was timing his return with a special media even at the end of this month.

Strictly my guess - I believe Steve-o will be announcing a new AppleTV as one product in this event.
 
I think the OP means that if we were expecting an ATV app store, then the WWDC would have been the place to launch the SDK. The ATV has been described as an ipod for the TV, so I'd expect it to update with the ipods - Hopefully in the next month, we'll get a feel for how much power the iPhone's new chip gives as we could end up with that powering a new ATV.

Doesn't sound good for an ATV app store. Yesterday was the time and place to get the ball rolling for developers, especially for a new ATV in September.

I have such high hopes for an Apple Living room product. Constantly being let down...:(

Agreed. Steve first introduced AppleTV as his hobby - he'd want to showboat any new changes - I would say look for something in the Fall.

Also, I can't imagine how an App Store would be useful/convenient with the Apple TV, unless you can use another form of input device.

inputting text with that remote is a royal pain, can't imagine performing other functions.

They should add some other video sites (hulu, etc), a few fun widgets and some other random functionalities and call it a day.
 
I've been having sync issues with my ATV for about a year. The silence HAS BEEN deafening, which is why I just switched to a Mac Mini Media Center. I'm putting all the media on an external HD right now.

Make the switch.
 
A 1080p capability upgrade would do the platform well. The lack of this feature is why I own a Mac Mini.

First of all, there is another form of an "input device". It's called the iPhone and the iPod touch.

Second, allow me to spark your imagination:
Try to envision Monopoly on the AppleTV (already a small hit on the iPhone). Aside from entering your name and account info at the start of the game, it would be a snap to use with the basic white remote. Up to five friends could play the game in 720p on their AppleTV. When they got tired of playing (and let's face it, Monopoly takes forever), they could "pause" the game and come back to it whenever they wanted.

But the real killer feature of this could be - if you could log in to your account on the iPhone version of the app, and take your turn. Once your turn was completed, the next player would get an email or a text, letting them know that it's their turn. So on and so forth. So now you're continuing the game while, say, everyone is at work.

Thus the dev is selling multiple copies of the iPhone app at $9.99 a piece, and the app for the AppleTV at $14.99.

Just one thought. Overall, there is a lot of potential in the existing ecosystem to combine the features and uses of AppleTV/iPhones/iPod Touches (as Forstall says).
