Everyone with a new MBP that arrived with (or has since developed) a QC problem (whether it's something that warrants a return, or is just a nuisance that can be tolerated) is encouraged to post their experience here. Also, even if you don't have a MBP with an issue but stumble across a post where someone reports he/she has a problem with the new MBP, please post a link. Here is one:

Well it was faulty straight out of the box... weird... it like the space bar was stuck down (except the key looked fine), it kept making the cursor scroll across the screen whenever a text field was active. Sounds a bit trivial compared to dead pixels and moo's and whine's etc, but it makes the laptop completely unusable!

After 15min on the phone with apple they declared it DOA.

Estimated turn around time for a new CTO 2.33 with the 160G HDD is 15 days. :( I nearly went for an off the shelf 2.33 ("it will ship within 24 hrs of notice of collection of your MBP sir") ... it was very tempting - I want my precious now !:(

Oh I thought about taking it to a service centre to get the keyboard looked at, but i was told there was a two week wait for service:eek:

When enough reports are made, lets tally the results to see if there is a pattern.

Here is another report:

I don't believe this! I've had my MPB for 23 hours and it's already broken!

The CD Drive which I said in an earlier post was making funny noises refuses to read the disk at all. I load the disk and two seconds later I get a sound that's similar to a stalled electric motor. I tried in OSX and Windows XP with the same problem so it's definitely a hardware problem.

I'm calling Apple right now.

WTF?

You're free to look the other way.

I'm just not totally sure what the point is. I guess you said it's to try and see if there are patterns, but doesn't that become noticeable inherently in the individual threads (i.e. the uneven brightness thread)?

Is another thread documenting what can be seen just on the main thread listing really necessary?

MBP won't start

I had opened up the memory compartment, and removed and then reinserted the memory. The MBP wouldn't start after that. Tried reseating the memory, and it made no difference.

Took it back to the local Apple store (had ordered it online), and they exchanged it for another one. Good thing I had a stock config, otherwise it would be much longer for a replacement.

BTW, I've removed the memory on this one with no problems. Something was defintely wrong with the other one.

Now I want to swap my hard drive with another drive I have. But that will be much more complicated than the memory.

I don't intend to argue with anyone whether or not this thread is necessary. This thread is just for the bare facts. No need for editorial comments.

The reports of problems with C2D MBPs are currently sprinkled over many threads. My intention in starting this particular thread was to consolidate all this information in one place. People can use the information as they see fit. BTW, if there is a particular thread already dedicated to a specific issue, why not just post a link to it here?

OK, enough pontificating. I'm going to take it upon myself to tally the results by the end of the month.

Suit yourself.

What will you do with the tally at the end of the month exactly? I mean, what exactly will that show really? Are you only going to tally the stuff people post here, or are you going to go into the various other threads that people don't post here (I assume you don't expect people to post every new MBP issue thread here as well, when we already see those threads here:

I will stick to things posted in this thread (including refrences to other topical threads dealing with specific issues). To avoid double-counting, each report will be linked to a user name (since that user might post concerning the same problem in more than one thread). Anyway, this is certainly not going to be a "scientific" poll, but hopefully some patterns will emerge (or maybe not, in which case kudos to Apple).

Also, are you tallying up just the number of people who report the issue, or are you also tallying up the number of people who also don't have the problem?

-Zadillo

do you have anything substantial other than telling the OP that he started a, in your opinion, pointless thread?

i cannot help but wonder what is the purpose of your post, is there any point? at least the OP is trying to gather some useful information, but what about you...

this is called trolling, and you get banned for doing this. this is also off topic, your posts gets deleted for this. so if you have nothing substantial to post, please don't post

or maybe you are just a Regular trying to post as many (altho pointless) posts to tally up your post number so you can have a avartar?

i expected my post to be deleted the same time as yours does, but i hope OP good luck finding his information.

I'm am sure that >95% of the people won't have a problem. But a failure rate of even 1-2% is, IMO, something that needs to be noted.

True. Although a failure rate of 1-2% for a laptop would actually be better by far than the industry average. A failure rate of under 1% would be absolutely extraordinary. The last I heard, the typical failure rate (any type of failure) is usually in the 3-5% range.

Umm, I'm not trolling him. I was genuinely asking him what the point of the original thread was, and he answered, and that was it. I haven't disagreed with him since he explained what he is hoping to accomplish with it.

The question you just said was a "troll" was also me genuinely asking whether he was actually going to compare the number of people in each thread who reported having the stated problem to those who didn't. I think that is also a legitimate question, and he answered it as well.

I don't think it's off topic since I was asking him about the topic of his thread.

And if you'll notice, I even posted a thread here to contribute to this (the thread with the discussion of uneven brightness). I think that should be evidence enough that I'm not trolling him or still insisting it is pointless.

I don't appreciate the insinuation that I am posting "pointless posts" to increase my vote count. If you look at my posting history you would see that I do not do this, and have always tried to post at least somewhat relevant discussions.

i came here to contribute my experience, but found my problem has been covered by the OP.

Zadillo, is that right -- 3-5% of laptops have serious faults? I find that amazing. I mean there's a lot of profit in these things... a company like apple has a reputation of building high quality products, you'd think they would be very protective of that reputation since it enables them to charge a price premium.

I would expect they have a real person check each laptop before shipping, my problem (faulty keyboard) would be immediately apparent. I wonder how QC actually works?

That would be a question about how quality control is handled at the factories where Apple's computers are assembled. Different ones probably have different issues.

3-5% is a fairly standard failure rate for almost all electronics. That isn't just "serious faults" though, it also applies to more minor defects, etc. As I understand it, Apple is normally actually ahead of the curve in terms of overall quality, but I haven't seen the standard figures (I doubt they are known for sure).

My 15" stock mbp's right bottom side doesn't sit on the table evenely when the screen is lifted up. It sits fine closed, but un-even when opened. I called the apple store, and they told me to bring it by and see if a tech can try doing an adjustment? Either way, everything else is fine. My screen is great, my machien is quiet, no other problems. I think i'll take it by the next time i go to Atlanta, but in the mean time I'll deal with it cause I don't want t get it switched and get srewed in getting another one with more problems.

No problems with mine - I'm rather happy with it. If I don't have the LCD positioned correctly, I can almost convince myself (with a white background) that there might be a slight uneven lighting problem. :p But that's true of any laptop that I've owned be it from Apple, Dell, etc.

But it looks like you don't want to hear from the folks that are happy so don't worry, this will (probably) be my only visit to this thread. :D I will laugh later, though, when someone posts somewhere else about how the "C2D Macbook Pros are just junk" and posts a link to this thread as "proof". :D

Rage on!

Mines a week 44 and so far so good. That display thread has me a bit paranoid and I sort of see a little bit of uneven lighting but it doesnt bother me, however the display is a little bit grainy. But then again so was my Powerbook.
