The Cost Value of an iPhone

I'm looking to buy a Brand New iPhone from Craigslist, How much should the price be if I'm buying? I know buying it from ATT can be a lot without signing a contract. Again, how much should a Brand New, In Box, iPhone 3G cost on Craisglist. Thanks!

PS: If I do find a deal how does the Brand New Box look like? (I dont want to get some fake iPhone from china) :D

I'd say it depends upon the kind of the iPhone you plan on buying. Do you want an officially unlocked iPhone? A friend of mine got one (32GB, not sure about the colour) on eBay for $900. I'd say the price is about right given that it is sold for 600+ euro in Belgium.

$900 ouch! I'm just looking for an iPhone that would work for ATT, technically I dont tend plan on using the phone function at all, I just want an iPhone touch with a camera function, since the latest iPod Touch has been a disappointment I 'm planning to settle for a an iPhone instead. I dont want a Ipod nano. and I already got an iPod Touch 2g.
 
Well, I got a used 3g, 8gb, for $50 on craigslist. So im guessing no more than $250 for a bottom of the line 3g, brand new.
 
I'm guessing that the market value is around 500 to 800 depending on which model, i.e., 32 gig model

don't forget the phones sold at ATT are subsidized so 299 isn't the actual price
 
wow, that's pricy e_4e any of you guys know a good reliable place to buy a refurbished iphone instead, I tried calling ATT about this but even for refurbished they're asking me to sign a 2 year contract :\
 
Just so you're aware. If you ever intend to use it as a phone AT&T will make you sign a contract anyway. They don't provide service to iPhones without a committment.

what if i decide to jailbreak it and use another company? would they make me sign a contract?

1) It's unlock, not jailbreak.

2) T-Mobile is the only other carrier in the US that you can use the iPhone with. And IIRC, they require a 2-year activation/contract on any phone that you activate with them. That doesn't mean that you can't upgrade your phone for a subsidized price, now. You can still do it once in the 2 years, and get a subsidized phone from them, with a two year contract, of course.

Wrong. You can iPhone service without commitment. That's why they have 3 different price points.

2-year, 1-year (or early upgrade) and no-commitment price points. All you have to do is tell AT&T to add a $30 for 3G/S or $20 for 1st Gen iPhone data plan to your account or number and that's it.

Nope. When you activate it through iTunes (Which you need to do in order for it to work), you extend your contract for two years. They do not have 2 year, 1 year, or no contract pricing, they have a 2 year contract price, an early upgrade price, and a no-contract price (Which still needs you to get a contract if you buy from AT&T). The No-Contract price is mostly for people that have no upgrade elegibility, or are buying the phone as a gift, or for the very few people who have an upgrade elegibility, but don't want to use their subsidy pricing "feature", so they can use it for a later time.
