Merry Christmas everybody.

This year, in a rather spur of the moment fashion, I decided to do something different and give myself a personal photographic project for the festive season.

Figured around the start of December I wanted do a 12 days of Christmas type of thing. A portrait a day for 12 days or something like that anyway.

I put the call out to gauge interest and well, yeah…I got the following.

Your xmas pix? Pretty accomplished, I'd say. But I don't think it's your choice of subject that makes people refrain from responding. It may be some of your comments - including this one - that puts them off...

Okay, I'll comment, since you have invited observations, and your tone suggests a sense of entitlement.

Firstly, I must admit that I'm not all that crazy about the subject matter; it could have been done very well, but here, I think you have failed to pull it off.

Had you tried something on the lines of 'Calendar Girls', but with both genders, and varying ages and activities, it could have been very good. However, the emphasis needs to be on humour, wit, imagination, creativity, and respect, with a knowing and smiling nod at the natural state of the human body in all of its glorious imperfections, rather than what you tried to do.

Indeed, I am not at all sure that you fully knew yourself what you were trying to do - were you trying to photograph pretty women, in a coy, and knowing context, or were you trying to salute Christmas by celebrating gloriously flawed humanity? It strikes me that you were trying to do the former while attempting to give the impression that you were doing the latter.

As a woman, (and as a woman who is also a keen photographer), I have to say that I find myself getting very tired of the clichéd and unimaginative and endless expressions of what feminist literature terms 'the male gaze'. In fact, I get pretty tired of the cliché of the older man, with aged, weather beaten features and a lived in face, rich with seamed experience, juxtaposed with nothing but a bevy of formless and characterless attractive females. Come on. Give us some variety, of age, gender, character and wit in your photographs.

To sum up, the men have variety, and character. The women (with the possible exception of No 25) are merely decorative and coy. This is a combination that does nothing for me. Choose one or the other when you do something of this sort.

Your work is a very personal style of portraiture. That will not generate a lot of comments here. Most of the comments you do get have to do with the attractiveness of the model or percent of skin shown. That's just your style and you have to live with it. At least you can make more money with it than most of us landscape folks...

As usual for your work, these are certainly technically accomplished both in-studio and in post processing. However, as another poster pointed out, it's the men in this series who tend to show any character (particularly 2,8,27). The women tend to be the standard sex-object-window-dressing (although #25 does to me show a spark of life) and for me aren't interesting. Was your approach to the women and men different while they were in your studio? In other words, were they directed by you or did they each decide on their own idea?
 
The internet is the internet. Don't expect anything from it and hopefully you'll be surprised.

Hope for the world and you'll only be disappointed.

Equally, if most people are landscape photographers then they probably won't feel confident enough to comment on something that is out of their depth.

Feedback-wise. I like the intention but for me personally the execution falls a little flat. Who is a target audience and what is the message that is meant to come across?

They all carry a similar style so from a technical POV 12 photos, maybe even 1, would have done.

Thematically they are all very similar. Are we suggesting that everyone loses there fake personalities and finally becomes themselves at christmas (hence the attire and lack of work/play clothes?).

Character-wise are we looking at a demographic of people that all together tell a story? Not sure! For me the men all seem to have various stages of stuble/beard and be in the same position!

The key word here is that this was a 'personal' project. Something that meant a lot to you! If you had fun in the process and enjoyed the time you spent on it then that in itself makes it a success!
 
While the men may be a little more playfully expressive than the women, some of the criticism seems unnecessarily harsh.

It’s a nice idea...though my main takeaway from the entire batch is that there are a lot more good-looking women out there than men.
 
No critique from me Adam, I wouldn't even know where to start commenting about it, but, I did learn that Tasmanian men are pretty damn hairy! :eek:

I trust that you, Mrs Bad Guy & Bosley are keeping well.

I was confused about the 2014 date on the first image, but didn't look at the dates of posting!

I dare say that Adam's standard of creativity has refined exponentially since then.
