What does the i in iPod, iPhone, iMac, iwhatever mean?

Does it stand for anything?

Apple declared the ‘i’ in iMac to stand for ‘Internet’. Attention was given to the out-of-box experience: the user needed to go through only two steps to set up and connect to the Internet. “There's no step 3!” was the catch-phrase in a popular iMac commercial narrated by actor Jeff Goldblum.[7] Another commercial, dubbed ”Simplicity Shootout”, pitted seven-year-old Johann Thomas and his border collie Brodie, with an iMac, against Adam Taggart, a Stanford University MBA student, with a Hewlett-Packard Pavilion 8250, in a race to set up their computers. Johann and Brodie finished in 8 minutes and 15 seconds,[8] whereas Adam was still working on it by the end of the commercial. Apple later adopted the ‘i’ prefix across its consumer hardware and software lines, such as the iPod, iBook, iPhone, iTunes, iLife, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, iWeb, iWork, iSight, iChat, iCal, and iSync. The prefix has caught on for non-Apple products as well.

Even more so, since the iPod doesn't use the internet....it stopped standing for internet after the iMac, clearly it doesn't stand for that anymore.


If anything I'd say it took on the idea , like MyTunes, or MyPod...but "i" sounds much nicer

Yeah. My friend just told me that that is what it means. I think its a good idea. The "i" does sound better though.

originally it mean internet as in Internet Mac, Internet Book. but the iPod does not make sense with that. iPhone does though.

I always wondered about the 'i' being used for everything as well. I knew that it was supposed to be internet. Now I think it is simply cliche. Especially iWork, common this is simply the new version of Appleworks. I do wish the 'i' would be dropped. Make the iPhone; ApplePhone, MacPhone or Newton Phone.

When Apple changed the iBook to Macbook and changed the powerbook to Macbook pro and Powermac to Mac Pro. I wondered would the iMac be made the MacMac or just simply Mac.

I'd heard that SJ called him iCEO, with the "i" standing for "interim." The prefix apparently stuck and was then used in iMac, iPod, and other apple brand names. Is this an urban myth?

I think "i" is just personification of our apple products, kind of like they are a part of us. IMO

Id like to think its innovation.

But i think it was internet but know its a case of it is related with apple.

I imagine they may choose to slowly reduce the use of i but they can never change the iPod name.
