If the demand is there it will sell.
If it’s discontinued, which it won’t be, it’ll be down to poor sales meaning there is no demand - so no value will not increase.

So why doesn’t Apple take current models for trade in, if after the return period? Friend got the Pro version (not max) and wants the air but no trade in option and they can’t return …trade in only for last year and beyond models?

Because the primary purpose of a trade in program is to reduce the number of used devices on the market and maintain prices of the newest models.

Your friend may be better off selling it to someone else on swappa or FB Market or Ebay and get some money back and then buy the air. Or should have waited till sometime in November when Apple's extended Holiday Return Policy kicks in (at least in the U.S).

I don’t think the problem is that too few Air units are being produced for those who want one.

Used prices on HomePods post initial discontinuation would indicate you are wrong.

Thanks, she really wanted to go thru Apple for couple reasons…so another question…how long before they put 17 in trade rotation…the whole year till 18 or sooner (maybe 6 months)? Thanks in advance.

Apple doesn't allow you to trade in any iPhone that is currently available for sale through Apple. This is why you also cannot trade in the 16e, because it is still being sold by Apple. Have to wait for the iPhone model to go out of production first. And like others have said it is also to reduce the number of used iPhones floating around.

If Apple allowed people to do what you are proposing, people would buy on iPhone model and use it as an extended trial and then after a month or so take it back and try and different model, and rinse and repeat over and over again. This would lead to an enormous amount of abuse. No company is going to allow this.

Gotcha..sounds reasonable…If she wants to make the change that badly, she can order the air and sell the pro.

When iphone 18 is out next year is when the 17 will be in the trade in.

Except each rinse would cost several hundred dollars, because the trade-in value would be far less than the new price.
A bit like trading in a car a few months after buying it new. Doing so would cost you many $1000s, but make the dealer very happy.

Is that what you base your entire argument on?

Apple’s business is dying. Sam and Jony are about to launch a revolutionary device that will turn the iPhone into the next Nokia 3310. We’ve seen time and time again how the inability to innovate ultimately leads to failure.

That’s why Apple has put a backup plan in place: they’ll release the Air and immediately discontinue it, so they can then sell the remaining units for $190,000 apiece at an auction.

Why would they take models they actively produce? They have all the supply they could want, your trade in is worthless to them.

If it is a one time product and grows a cult following it could become valuable, I’m not sure what that would look like, I doubt it would ever be worth over a grand it was new but stranger things have happened. Saying that, it us very unlikely because phones are a product that the majority want the latest.
