I haven't really been following the progression of Apple TV or the rumors but I was just wondering if Apple was planning on bringing Apps to it and when this might possibly happen?

What do you guys think some of the future upgrades for the Apple TV will be?

If the first :apple:TV is any indication, you might be waiting a while for an update. Who knows what :apple:'s goal is with this device.

Can't wait to see an app store come to Apple TV. I'm so tempted to buy Apple TV2 but I already have a wii that streams netflix perfectly to my tv. I wish they would roll out the app store now.

The original main function for the :apple:tv is as a media extender/WiFi video client for iTunes libraries, which it does quite well. The NetFlix and YouTube apps were most likely added to help :apple:tv compete with other TV-enabled media devices like Roku.

I've also streamed NetFlix via a Wii. The :apple:tv NetFlix client's user interface is consistent with the :apple:tv's other apps and, IMHO, considerably better than the Wii's NetFlix app.

Might have to check out Apple's interface for Netflix. I sort of hate having to move the wii remote around to select things. Is the streaming quality any better with the Apple TV?

I use both the Wii and Apple TV for Netflix. Apart from a 'This content requires HDCP for playback' warning with the Apple TV when first using Netflix, which by the way was simply fixed by restarting both the TV and Apple TV, I find the Apple TV UI much better than the Wii and it seems to have a lot less buffering issues. For $99 you can't really go wrong, especially jailbroken for XBMC or Plex.

Waving the WiiMote for searching in NetFlix was rather annoying, yes. Recent :apple:tv firmware updates seem to have solved the majority of users' streaming problems, including my own.

The video quality on HD content is nicer than on the Wii, for obvious reasons, but plays best if your Internet connection is faster than 4 Mbps. Up until recently, I only had 3 Mbps and couldn't play HD selections without major lag and stuttering, and had to limit myself to SD selections. Upgrading to 6 Mbps (AT&T's fastest non-UVerse DSL speed) has "opened" HD streaming for my household, and my wife is totally diggin' it now.

The MLB.tv and NBA League selections are not totally useless either. Subscribers obviously get to stream games and video highlights, but even non-subscribers can use this to check on league standings and game score updates in real time, much like on ESPN.com. I have a hunch that NFL will appear sometime this fall when its season starts, along with NHL. Apple could very well use those as "anchor apps" for an :apple:tv App Store.

I was thinking the same regarding the wait, until I saw the gfx the ipad2 outputs though the new adapter. Im thinking the new apple tv comes sooner rather than later (this fall) with the specs you mention above, more storage and a game controller.

Well they added MLB and NBA apps to the Apple TV in the 4.3 update. I just tried out the free trial of MLB and the quality was very good. I'm just not into baseball like I used to be.

More importantly though, the 4.3 update added Airplay support for 3rd party apps from other iOS devices. Many of the apps you would expect and want on the Apple TV are starting to add support for Airplay or have indicated they will add support in a future update.

In my opinion this is better than an app on the actual Apple TV itself because the interface is multitouch enabled and just a foot from your face. So it's easier and more enjoyable to move around in, browse, and control than by using a remote to access the content on a screen 10 feet away. Of course this only applies if you already own a capable iPod Touch, iPhone, or iPad.
